Fireworks Thrown on I-271 & From a 10th-Floor Balcony: Mayfield Heights Police Blotter

These incidents reported on July 3 and 4 were provided by the Mayfield Heights Police Department.

Mayfield Heights Police received the expected dozens of calls on July 3 and 4 about people setting off fireworks in yards and on city streets, but not all were run-of-the-mill reports.

  • A caller told police that a white minivan or SUV was parked on the side of Interstate 271, near the 33rd mile marker, with people inside throwing fireworks at other cars passing by around 9 p.m. July 3. Highland Heights Police also called Mayfield Police to inform the department that they, too, received a similar call. The Highland Heights caller said the vehicle exited at Mayfield Road. Officers were unable to locate the vehicle.
  • July 4, a Gates Mills resident called police to report that somebody was shooting fireworks from a 10th-floor balcony.
  • Later, at 11:50 p.m., a Temple Avenue homeowner said somebody rang her doorbell after throwing a firecracker on her front porch. The woman requested special attention to her home, but police were unable to find the offender.
  • Officers responded to a fireworks complaint on Eastwood Avenue on July 4 and ended up confiscating fireworks and a small amount of marijuana from a gathering.
Most other calls involved officers responding to complaints at residences and telling people to stop shooting fireworks. Others involved people shooting them in the middle of the street.

Roselawn Road seemed to have the most complaints. Officers also responded to complaints from Iroquois Avenue, Ranchland Drive, Maplewood Road, Woodhurst Avenue and East and West Miner roads.
