The Ohio State Highway Patrol sent out a press release Monday morning notifying the public that state troopers will conduct a drunken driving checkpoint sometime this week. The county where the checkpoint will be set up will be announced the day before and the exact location will be announced the morning of the checkpoint. "If you plan to consume alcohol, designate a driver or make other travel arrangements before you drink. Don't let another life be lost for the senseless and selfish act of getting behind the wheel impaired," the patrol said in a prepared statement. Thanksgiving Eve is one of the biggest drinking days of the year. Old friends get together, often at bars, before spending time with their families on Thursday. The Ohio State Highway Patrol is urging people to celebrate responsibly and not drive under the influence. Last year during the Thanksgiving holiday weekend, 17 people were killed on Ohio’s roadways, with 30 percent related to impaired driving, according to the highway patrol. Last year 27 people were killed due to impaired driving between the Thanksgiving and New Year’s Eve holidays. AAA predicts 43.6 million Americans will travel at least 50 miles from home over the holiday. Patrol officials say motorists should schedule plenty of time for road trips, so as not to speed. The Ohio State Highway Patrol announced a drunk driving checkpoint will be set up in Portage County Saturday evening. The exact location will be announced Saturday morning. “Based on provisional data, there were 332 OVI-related fatal crashes in which 359 people were killed last year and 7,507 injured in Ohio,” Lt. Nakia Hendrix, commander of the Ravenna Post, said. “State troopers make on average 25,000 OVI arrests each year in combating these dangerous drivers. OVI checkpoints are designed to not only deter impaired driving, but to proactively remove these dangerous drivers from our roadways.” The latest checkpoint was in Portage County in Brimfield on St. Patrick's Day. Officers arrested 17 for drunk driving.
