Police Blotter: Man Passed Out in Police Car

A caller said an older man was intoxicated and uncooperative outside Panini's Bar & Grille at 11:41 p.m. May 9. The man passed out in the back of a police cruiser. He was cited for disorderly conduct and taken to Hillcrest Hospital. A Westerham Road woman called police at 3:32 p.m. May 9 and said jewelry was missing from her house. She was unsure when it was taken. An unresponsive man was sitting on a bench in front of Walmart at 8:54 a.m. May 9.  Several people tried to wake him up, according to a caller. Police said the man had a diabetic reaction. A brother and sister were fighting at 10:34 p.m. May 7 on Iroquois Avenue. She told police that he pushed her into the stove/refrigerator and a friend had to pull him off. She wanted her …

Hillcrest 100 Donates to Michl Scholarship Fund

Check for $1,000 presented to officer's family.

Mayfield Heights Police Department Sgt. Gregory Michl will be honored with a memorial scholarship fund. Michl, whose accomplishments included starting the Juvenile Diversion Program, died on March 6, 2011. Kathy Michl, his wife of 26 years, was presented with a $1,000 check for the scholarship fund at Monday's City Council meeting. The money was donated by Hillcrest 100, a nonprofit organization supporting area first responders in Mayfield Heights, Mayfield Village, Highland Heights, Gates Mills, Lyndhurst and Richmond Heights. Michl said a scholarship fund was a fitting tribute to her husband. Police Blotter: Man Missed Work Because He Was In Jail

An employer called on May 2 and wanted police to check the welfare of a Maplewood Road resident, who had not been to work in Highland Heights since April 26 and was not answering his cell phone. The man had never missed work before. Police told the caller that the man was in jail. A Marsol Road man reported at 3:30 p.m. May 5 that juveniles were throwing sticks onto his balcony. Police talked to two juveniles and the parents of one of the kids. A Belrose Road resident called at 11:27 p.m. May 4 to complain that a neighbor was playing basketball in the driveway next to his bedroom window. Police talked to the neighbor. 'Pigeon Drop' Scam Hitting Area

Suspects stop shoppers and show what appears to be large sum of money.

Police warn residents that a "pigeon drop" scam has been reported in the area. Mayfield Heights Detective Joe Leskovec said that he's heard from detectives in other cities that this scam has been attempted recently. He said all cases involved an older black male and a well-dressed black female. The suspects approach people in shopping centers and show them a large sum of money, which is actually a $20 or $100 bill wrapped around a large amount of counterfeit bills. They seek elderly people and say they are a bank employee or other important person and they ask the victim if they dropped the money. They then ask for help finding the money's owner and offer to split the cash if the owner can't be found. The victim is asked to go to the bank …

Police Blotter: Stray Balls, Stolen Sewer Grate and Dog in Danger

A Summit Drive resident called on May 2 about neighbor trouble. The caller was upset because juveniles next door kept climbing a fence to retrieve balls. An officer told to the children's parents about the complaint and were told the kids would stop jumping the fence. An officer was stopped on May 2 and told that a sewer grate was stolen the previous night from the parking lot at Executive Caterers on Landerhaven Drive. Special attention was requested for similar thefts. A caller at 9:42 p.m. May 1 thought a woman might had been intoxicated because she fell three times in a Mayfield Road parking lot. Police Blotter: Craiglist Ad Creates Concern for Resident

An East Miner Road resident in the process of moving advertised items on Craigslist. He called police at 12:19 p.m. April 30 because a man called about a washer and dryer and was upset when he was told that it would not be held for him until he could come and buy it. The text messages then stopped and the man didn't want to file a report. A caller said a man was cutting himself at 5:09 p.m. April 30 at the playground at an apartment building on Golden Gate Boulevard. A Taser was used on the man, who was taken to Hillcrest Hospital. Juveniles were smoking and kicking each other, annoying mothers with small children at 5:05 p.m. April 30 at the South Park playground. About 10 to 12 juveniles were there, but police said they were behaving. …

Police Blotter: Son Said He Took Antique Table for Surprise Refurbishing

A Commonwealth Avenue woman suspected her son of taking antiques from the house on April 26. The boy acknowledged taking a table, which he was having refurbished as a surprise for his mother. He said he would have the table back the next day. A Sunset Road woman called at 5:12 a.m. April 27 and said her water tank was still leaking and she wanted an officer to come back and tighten the valves. The woman had originally called at 2:39 a.m. because she wasn't strong enough to close the valves and a service department worker wouldn't be available until 8 a.m. A caller complained about a speeding car at 10:01 p.m. April 26 on Mayfield Road. Police Blotter: Police Officer Told Resident About Break-In

Update: An item was updated to reflect that the man who talked to a Ranchland Drive resident was indeed a Mayfield Heights Police Department detective. A Ranchland Drive woman said at 4:51 p.m. April 24 that an officer stopped by her house and asked if she had seen or heard anything the previous night because there was a break-in at the house behind her on Mayfield Ridge Road. Police initially said there weren't any Mayfield Heights officers going door-to-door and there was no break in reported in the area. However, there had been a break-in on Mayfield Ridge and the woman was told that the detective who visited was seeking followup information. Police Blotter: A Close Brush with Vicious Dogs and More About Wrong-Way Driver

A man from Woodlane Drive called officers Monday afternoon after being chased by two Rottweilers. He made it to his residence, but was unsure which direction the dogs went. Police found the dogs and returned them to the station within 15 minutes. A woman came nearly three hours later to pick the dogs up. Mayfield Village Police aided officers from Mayfield Heights in response to a report Saturday morning of a driver headed southbound in the northbound express lanes of Interstate 271. A man driving a semi-truck with two trailers swerved to avoid the vehicle, resulting in an overturned tractor and the lanes being shut down. The truck contained no toxic materials. Police Blotter: A Worried Grandmother and Road Rage

A grandmother from Euclid called Mayfield Heights Police after midnight Friday with concerns about her apparently suicidal 14-year-old granddaughter. The girl had called to say that she would ingest "a bunch of pills" to kill herself if she had to continue staying with her mother at an apartment on Marsol Road. The responding officer eventually went to the apartment and explained to the girl that she must abide by her mother's rules as long as she is a juvenile. The girl said she only mentioned taking pills as a ploy to get her grandmother to pick her up. A Chagrin Falls man contacted Mayfield Heights Police Thursday after a heated traffic dispute in front of Eastgate Plaza. He had been driving with an acquaintance, who had left the scene …
