Longtime Mayor Swears in Son to Mayfield Heights City Council

Ross DeJohn, who served as mayor for nearly 30 years, swore in his son, Bob, Wednesday night

Since politics run through the DeJohn bloodline, the city had a built-in candidate to swear in Bob DeJohn to his seat on council — his father. Ross DeJohn, who was mayor for nearly 30 years, swore in his son Wednesday during a special, organizational city council meeting. Members of the family took pictures as the elder DeJohn had his son repeat his words in front of current city officials. "The kids were exposed to all of this, but Bob has always shown an interest in city government," Ross said of his family. "In the last two years, he's really paid attention to what's going on the city. He'd come to me and say, 'well, why are they doing this? Do you think this is right? "He was was following that step, and that's good. That's how I got …

Mayfield Heights City Council Applicant Responds to Selection Process

One applicant was disappointed with how the city selected its newest council member

Though Mayfield Heights City Council is set to name its new officers tonight, some in the community are still looking for answers regarding the selection of its newest member. That list includes Susan Sabetta, one of the six people council was originally going to choose from to fill its open seat. Instead, Mayor Anthony DiCicco made his own selection, Robert DeJohn, after council failed to reach a consensus. Sabetta voiced her frustration with the process in a letter published by The Sun News. Here's an excerpt: I am disappointed in the way the new Mayfield Heights council member came about. Understanding that this decision is an important one, especially since it follows what was called ’a moving forward’ agenda, the Council President …

typical of this council. I wonder if this is the most gridlocked city ever to get anything accomplished. They all have their own agendas, so I'm not surprised. Been going on for years and now they just added to thier agendas by who is now on council.   more ›

Mayfield Heights Picks New Council Member

Robert DeJohn, who was not in the pool of candidates, has been appointed by the mayor

Mayfield Heights has a new city councilman, but he is not one of the final six candidates who were interviewed in recent weeks. Robert DeJohn has been appointed to council, Mayor Anthony DiCicco said Tuesday afternoon. DeJohn is a lifelong Mayfield Heights resident who currently sits on the city's planning commission. DeJohn lost by just eight points to councilmember Nino Monaco in the November 2011 election. Why, after six, 20-minute interviews and an executive session, did the city go in an entirely different direction to fill the vacancy? Council could not agree on a candidate within the 45 days that passed since DiCicco left an empty seat on council, the mayor said. "All the candidates were great," DiCicco said. "When it came down to …

Common Sense Citizen has more "common sense" than all the other respondents to this appointment. Robert DeJohn is already involved in city government as a member of the City Planning Commission and had the most votes as a runner-up in the last election.... So, he DOES have experience in City Government and he is ALREADY popular with many city residents who cast votes for him. Measure his service …   more ›

What Would You Want in Mayland Plaza?

What is your dream vision for what is still the largest vacant parcel in the city?

People continually point to the underutilized Mayland Shopping plaza as a place for potential economic development. The plaza was a focus in the 2004 master plan, and the things being said about filling the numerous vacancies today mirror those said nine years ago. The old master plan reads:  The site, actually an arrangement of seven strip shopping buildings, was repeatedly cited by community representatives as a location that reflected poorly on the community and should be targeted for redevelopment The property came up multiple times during Mayfield Heights City Council's recent interviews for the vacant seat. "A huge missed opportunity is what's going on in the Mayland Plaza. It is a huge, huge missed opportunity. It is approximately …

This lot contains a gas well in the center of it with two containment tanks backing up to the apartments on the back side of it. The liability of this industrial piece can be an issue and should be capped. This would attract better interest and possible development plans.   more ›

Mayfield Heights City Council Continues Mulling Over Candidates

After an executive session Monday, council members and the mayor could not reach a consensus

The wait continues. After nearly an hour, Mayfield Heights City Council members and Mayor Anthony DiCicco emerged from an executive session Monday night with no news to report on the governing body's vacant seat. They had planned discuss the six candidates they had already interviewed and make an appointment, but failed to reach a consensus. "Council has taken the opportunity to review all the applicants and do all the necessary vetting and discussion," Mayfield Heights Law Director Leonard F. Carr said. "This is an ongoing process, and it will continue." Officials offered no timetable on the decision, and council members declined to answer any questions regarding the selection process. In the early going of the regular council meeting, …

Who Should Be Appointed to Mayfield Heights City Council?

Click here and vote in our poll

It's decision time in Mayfield Heights. City council is expected to appoint a new member of the governing body at its regular meeting at 7:30 p.m. tonight at city hall. Council and Mayor Anthony DiCicco have interviewed six candidates since Feb. 27 to fill the seat the mayor left when he took over for the outgoing Greg Costabile. The hopefuls are: Mayfield Heights voters don't get a say now, but they will later this year because the seat's unexpired term runs through December 31, 2015. According to the Charter of the City of Mayfield Heights, an election to fill the vacancy must be held at the next municipal election on Nov. 5. With that in mind, which of these candidates would you like to see fill the vacancy? Vote in our poll and let us …

Putting the council on notice for a person who will be speaking for the residents, good communication and no legacy or croynism. I state that I have watched the accomplishments of Susan Sabetta honestly stepping forward with her eithics and desire to keep our street and neighboring streets aware and educated on city and local policy. Through her efforts we have florished while being able to …   more ›

Mayfield Heights Council Prepares to Fill Vacancy

City Council members hosted their final interview session on Wednesday

Mayfield Heights City Council hosted its final interview session Wednesday for a seat members hope to fill within four days. Wayne Farinacci and Jeff Likover each had 20 minutes to prove they could be the right man to fill a vacancy left by Mayor Anthony DiCicco, who replaced Greg Costabile in December. Farinacci is president of the Mayfield Alumni Association, director of the popular Cleveland International Challenge Cup Bocce Tournament and a former Mayfield High School associate principal. This potential appointment marks the third city council bid for Likover, whose life outside of politics includes everything from a long career at Parker Hannifin to limousine driving. Each member of council took turns asking questions and follow-ups …

Mayfield Heights City Council Interviews Two Candidates for Vacancy

Council plans on making an appointment on March 11

Two candidates for Mayfield Heights City Council's vacant seat had 20 minutes apiece Monday to make an impression on the current members who will soon choose one of six candidates. Both council's questions and the responses they yielded from Marty Kelbel and Benjamin Stocum varied, touching on housing, sign variances, beer and wine sales and how to increase revenues. Each member of council took turns asking questions and follow-ups when needed. Kelbel has unsuccessfully run for council three times over the years and once for mayor in 2005. Stocum currently sits on the city's Board of Zoning Appeals and ran for council in 2011. Council will appoint one of six candidates by March 11. Both men were asked if they would run for seat during the …

Mayfield Heights Council to Interview More Candidates

The interviews will be held at two special meetings this week, beginning tonight

Mayfield Heights City Council has announced two special meetings this week to interview more candidates for the governing body's vacancy. Council's first interview session will be held at 5 p.m. today at city hall. The second will begin at 7 p.m. on Wednesday. Council is expected to interview four more candidates — Wayne Farinacci, Marty Kelbel, Jeff Likover and Benjamin Stocum — though the city did not announce who will be interviewed at which sessions this week. Council interviewed Realtor Susan Sabetta and Mike Ballistrea, the manager of Hillcrest Hospital's Nuclear Medicine and PET Imaging department, following the regular council meeting last week. The vacancy on Council was created when Council President Anthony DiCicco became city …

Mayfield Heights City Council Vacancy Interviews Underway

Council interviewed the first two of six candidates earlier this week

Mayfield City Council members interviewed two candidates this week for the vacant seat the city will soon fill. Council interviewed Realtor Susan Sabetta and Mike Ballistrea, the manager of Hillcrest Hospital's Nuclear Medicine and PET Imaging department, following the regular council meeting Monday, according to a Sun News report. The candidates have lived in the city for 32 and 33 years, respectively. The candidates are among a pool of six vying to hold the seat until December 31. Council will make an appointment to fill the vacancy before March 18. Because this unexpired term runs through December 31, 2015, an election to fill the vacancy must be held at the next municipal election on November 5, according to the Charter of the City of …
