The firm will provide monthly and project-to-project engineering services
Mayfield Heights will bring URS Corp. back as its engineering services provider for another year at virtually the same cost. An engineer from URS, one of the world's largest engineering and design firms, will receive a $2,100-per-month retainer for attendance at various council, zoning and legislative meetings, periodic reports, site inspections, project budgets and technical services requested by the mayor. That amount is fixed, while another payment tier would paid on a project-to-project basis. "The monthly retainer barely increases, and there is a slight increase in the rate for an inspector — $2," Mayor Anthony DiCicco said. "Other than that, the contract is pretty much the same (as last year's)." The contract expires in February 2014…

Mayfield officials hope Rochester, N.Y.-based Morgan Communities' acquisition of Marsol will lead to fewer reported crimes there
Though fights, thefts and other crimes at Marsol Towers continue to fill the Mayfield Heights Police log, city officials are hopeful for a safer future. Residents of the six-building apartment campus on Marsol Road recently received letters discussing a change in ownership. Willoughby-based K&D Group has sold the property to Morgan Properties, a firm in Rochester, N.Y. that manages and operates apartments in 10 states. "This company will be doing some house cleaning with regard to the suites and any problem tenants that they have in the complex," Mayfield Heights Councilwoman Gayle Teresi said. "I was very excited to hear that." The company's website now offers visitors the opportunity to explore and apply for leases at Marsol. …
Mayfield Heights City Council added a resolution to its agenda in honor of Gina DeJesus, Michelle Knight and Amanda Berry
The rescues of three women held captive in a Cleveland house since the early 2000s weighed so heavily on Mayfield Heights officials' minds that they deemed a resolution necessary. City Council voted to add a resolution to the agenda acknowledging the return of Gina DeJesus, Michelle Knight and Amanda Berry to their homes after they were found in a Seymour Avenue home owned by 52-year old Ariel Castro. Monday night was the first time Mayfield Heights City Council has gathered since the story about the women broke and became a national story. The resolution is "an expression of relief and joy" over their discovery. "With Mother's Day, everybody was thinking about those girls," Mayor Anthony DiCicco said of city council. "It really hit hard …

Use our map widget to find out which roads in the city are receiving repairs this year
The Mayfield Heights 2013 road program consists of 18 projects that are expected to cost a total of $485,773. The projects involve asphalt road resurfacing, vegetation removal and the repair of pavement joints, driving lanes and portions of gutters. Two projects involve separate portions of a major street — the resurfacing of Lander Road, from Mayfield Road to Interstate 271 and the application of joint seal material to cracks along Lander, from Cedar to 271. Use the interactive widget above to see where projects will be taking place this summer. Click on a road name on the list on the left-hand side and a box will appear, providing information about each project. City council accepted the program at its regular meeting this week. The city…

The grant would pay for drug prevention programs and an officer in the school district
Though it's a program mayors in Ohio wish they didn't need, most acknowledge school drug prevention as a necessity. That's why Mayfield Heights Mayor Anthony DiCicco made sure to get city council's approval to apply for a state grant to cover the costs of prevention officers and programs in the school district. He received approval this week, in time to meet next Friday's deadline. The unspecified grant amount would help pay the salary of a resource officer at Mayfield Middle School and a D.A.R.E. officer at Mayfield High School. "It's very important that these officers can get involved in these kids' lives at a point where, hopefully, it makes a difference in making good decisions going forward," DiCicco said. He described the resource …

Ross DeJohn, who served as mayor for nearly 30 years, swore in his son, Bob, Wednesday night
Since politics run through the DeJohn bloodline, the city had a built-in candidate to swear in Bob DeJohn to his seat on council — his father. Ross DeJohn, who was mayor for nearly 30 years, swore in his son Wednesday during a special, organizational city council meeting. Members of the family took pictures as the elder DeJohn had his son repeat his words in front of current city officials. "The kids were exposed to all of this, but Bob has always shown an interest in city government," Ross said of his family. "In the last two years, he's really paid attention to what's going on the city. He'd come to me and say, 'well, why are they doing this? Do you think this is right? "He was was following that step, and that's good. That's how I got …

Find out who will serve what roles in your city government
After swearing in its newest member Wednesday night, Mayfield Heights City Council turned its attention to officer appointments. Here are the city council members who were appointed officers. In each case, all seven members voted for the individual, with no other nominations. Mayfield Heights Mayor Anthony DiCicco said council will appoint members to various committees, commissions and the Board of Zoning Appeals at Monday's regular council meeting.

One applicant was disappointed with how the city selected its newest council member
Though Mayfield Heights City Council is set to name its new officers tonight, some in the community are still looking for answers regarding the selection of its newest member. That list includes Susan Sabetta, one of the six people council was originally going to choose from to fill its open seat. Instead, Mayor Anthony DiCicco made his own selection, Robert DeJohn, after council failed to reach a consensus. Sabetta voiced her frustration with the process in a letter published by The Sun News. Here's an excerpt: I am disappointed in the way the new Mayfield Heights council member came about. Understanding that this decision is an important one, especially since it follows what was called ’a moving forward’ agenda, the Council President …

Robert DeJohn, who was not in the pool of candidates, has been appointed by the mayor
Mayfield Heights has a new city councilman, but he is not one of the final six candidates who were interviewed in recent weeks. Robert DeJohn has been appointed to council, Mayor Anthony DiCicco said Tuesday afternoon. DeJohn is a lifelong Mayfield Heights resident who currently sits on the city's planning commission. DeJohn lost by just eight points to councilmember Nino Monaco in the November 2011 election. Why, after six, 20-minute interviews and an executive session, did the city go in an entirely different direction to fill the vacancy? Council could not agree on a candidate within the 45 days that passed since DiCicco left an empty seat on council, the mayor said. "All the candidates were great," DiCicco said. "When it came down to …

What is your dream vision for what is still the largest vacant parcel in the city?
People continually point to the underutilized Mayland Shopping plaza as a place for potential economic development. The plaza was a focus in the 2004 master plan, and the things being said about filling the numerous vacancies today mirror those said nine years ago. The old master plan reads: The site, actually an arrangement of seven strip shopping buildings, was repeatedly cited by community representatives as a location that reflected poorly on the community and should be targeted for redevelopment The property came up multiple times during Mayfield Heights City Council's recent interviews for the vacant seat. "A huge missed opportunity is what's going on in the Mayland Plaza. It is a huge, huge missed opportunity. It is approximately …
