Junior ran for 5 TDs, 196 yards in season debut
As a broad-shouldered Khari Anderson towers over most people with his 6-2, 185 pound frame, he’ll almost make you do a double-take when he suggests that he’s not that big of a man. Perhaps it’s the junior defensive end-running back’s way of reducing the pressure and slowly growing into his role as the team’s leading rusher, but pretty soon, it won’t hold up under scrutiny. Five rushing touchdowns and 196 yards against Western Reserve Academy last week have a way of raising a man’s stature, not just physically, but also in the minds of his teammates and opponents. Anderson’s massive totals highlighted the Hawks’ season-opening 40-14 victory over the Pioneers and have built anticipation for tonight’s 7 p.m. tilt at Lutheran West. But if …

Hawks get victory in a tricky opener over Western Reserve Academy
Western Reserve Academy’s bizarre non-punting, non-kicking style left Hawken coach Clifford Walton rather baffled with onside kicks after scores and no punts on fourth down. But whatever confusion the Pioneers wrought, Hawken running back Khari Anderson was right there to clarify matters Friday evening. Anderson, a junior, ran 24 times for 196 yards and scored five touchdowns as the Hawks defeated the tactics of WRA for a season-opening home win, 40-14. The Hawks pounded out 334 total yards of offense, all on the ground. Seth King had 73 yards and Josh Walters 57. Although Anderson produced gaudy numbers, he fumbled twice which helped the Pioneers rally from a 14-0 halftime deficit to tie the game in the third quarter. Nonetheless, Walton …

Anderson ready to step in for departed Simmons
Hawken football coach Clifford Walton will tell you that the game’s dictated by numbers – the more players you have, the better off you are to endure the season’s inevitable injuries. The Hawks don’t have a lot of guys this season, and with some untimely injuries, the team’s numbers have been heading in the wrong direction and the season hasn’t even started yet. After running back Khari Anderson took a helmet-to-helmet blow in a scrimmage with Beachwood on Friday night, Walton’s heart undoubtedly leapt for a moment. Thankfully, Anderson was OK and scored a crucial touchdown in overtime. With the season opening this Friday at home against Western Reserve Academy, going down another player – especial your star, no less – would’ve been a …

Anderson takes a big hit but gets up to score during an exhibition game with Beachwood
Scrimmages are supposed to be light-hitting affairs without a real score being recorded and special-teams play kept at a minimum. But you wouldn’t have known that from the way Hawken running back Khari Anderson received a vicious helmet-to-helmet hit from Beachwood’s Nate Hamilton on Friday night. Anderson had his bell rung, and the dazed and confused junior looked like he was chiming on the wrong hour for a while on the sidelines at Hawken’s Walton Stadium. But the team’s trainer and doctor cleared him to return in overtime. The young man who had his helmet hidden from him on the sidelines scored the game-tying touchdown on two overtime runs to match an earlier Beachwood TD scamper. Then Ian Bell found senior Mark Murgiano in the corner …

The Cleveland Heights High, Shaker Heights High and Hawken School band will perform in the 16th Annual Tri-C High School Rock Off Final Exam Feb. 11
Lack of Focus just became a band a month ago. The members hadn’t performed live together. But they tried out for the Tri-C High School Rock Off anyway, and snagged a spot in the final round. They were one of 66 high school bands that made it out of 80 applicants, said Frank Imhoff of Live Nation. The band performed Friday night at the House of Blues during round three of the 16th annual event Feb. 11. Cleveland Heights High School student Giles Vondoom was confident they’d move past the first round to the final, known as the "Final Exam,” before he and the band played. “I may feel nervous, but I don’t feel intimated. I feel as a band we’re phenomenal and we have the potential to win it, if not this year, next year,” said 16-year-old Giles…

Sophomore defensive lineman Khari Anderson, sophomore defensive back Jacob Gries, senior offensive lineman Baui Senkfor and junior defensive back Ryan Stilson were tabbed as special mentions on the team. The Hawks finished 6-4 on the season.
