Students from Hawken School won $2,500 in scholarships.
Two students from Hawken School in Gates Mills have been announced as National Merit Scholarship winners. Russell M. Cohen and Sydney T. Costantini won $2,500 each and were part of 2,500 winners chosen from a pool of 15,000 across the nation. Cohen plans to study film production in college while Costantini is undecided. National Merit $2500 Scholarship winners are the finalists in each state judged to have the strongest combination of accomplishments, skills, and potential for success in rigorous college studies. The number of winners named in each state is proportional to the state’s percentage of the nation’s graduating high school seniors

Hawken is the only school in Ohio to join the worldwide consortium of independent schools
Hawken now belongs to an exclusive group of schools across the globe whose students will engage in shared learning on the Web. Hawken School recently announced its membership in the Global Online Academy, a 23-member consortium of independent schools who take full-credit, Web-based courses that include tests, conversations and collaborations with students in other states and countries. “This will be a multi-year process, as we gain the information and ideas needed to utilize this partnership in a way that most enhances the Hawken tradition and learning experience,” D. Aric Floyd was a finalist in the event that featured 58 regional winners competing in New York
Hawken junior Aric Floyd said acting was his favorite interest of all that he excels at, and it showed last weekend in New York. Aric was named a finalist at 30th season of the English-Speaking Union National Shakespeare Competition. Aric placed as one of 10 finalists at the event held on April 22 at the Lincoln Center in New York. Aric was one of 58 regional winners at the event. He qualified earlier this year by winning the Cleveland Branch of The English-Speaking Union. He performed a Shakespearean sonnet and monologue at the national competition. Read about Annie Artz's accomplishment and the prizes she earned
Some honest writing and timeliness earned a Hawken School senior a spot under the lights at Quicken Loans Arena. Gates Mills resident Annie Artz was one of 10 graduating seniors from the area who won a scholarship from FirstMerit Bank and the Cleveland Cavaliers, the team announced Friday. Annie and the other students were recognized before the game against the New York Knicks Friday night. Each student was awarded a check for $2,000 and an iPad. Annie and the other students submitted 500-word essays about the most important lesson they have learned in life and how they will apply it in the future. The Cavs and FirstMerit also looked at standardized test scores, academic achievement, community involvement and extracurricular activities. A …

Aric Floyd is an athlete, actor, science and engineering champion and much more
Only a student as accomplished as Aric Floyd could calmly run through a list of Ivy League colleges when asked what he did over spring break. "We visited some colleges on the East Coast — Brown and Columbia, Harvard, Yale and Princeton and MIT," the Hawken School junior responded. "I'm leaning towards Yale, but the hard thing is getting in." In talking to Aric, you get the sense that the hard part won't be getting in, but figuring out what to concentrate on. Aric is an athlete, an actor, a science and engineering fair winner and a member of one of the top speech and debate teams in the state. A Hawken School senior finished in the Top 25 of the "Stop The Hate" essay contest.
While she didn't make it into the final round, a Hawken School senior was named a semi-finalist in a local essay contest. Annie Artz was named semi-finalists in the fifth annual Maltz Museum of Jewish Heritage Stop the Hate: Youth Speak Out! essay contest, according to a press release. Artz was among 25 students from around the area to be semi-finalists. The Top 10 finalists were named and will compete for a total of $100,000 in scholarships and prizes. Their essays address a variety of issues, from living with alopecia, mental illness to LGBT issues and economic diversity and offer heartfelt and innovative solutions.

Hawken School students were first place in Public Forum Debate and Congressional Debate categories
Students from Hawken School performed admirably at the Ohio High School Speech League Speech and Debate State Tournament earlier this month. Individuals earned a pair of state championships in specific events and the school places third overall in the team sweepstakes. Tim Perevozchikov of Pepper Pike and Ron Lubarsky of Highland Heights were named state champions in the Public Forum Debate competition -- winning 29 of the 30 tournament ballots. Meanwhile, Will Mascaro of Shaker Heights was named state champion in Congressional Debate. Twenty-three Hawken students qualified for the tournament. The lady Hawks broke records and finished first in four events
State championships are clearly the standard for Hawken's swimming program. The girls team won its 15th consecutive state championship, its 23rd in Hawken School history. According to an OHSAA report from the tournament, senior Carrie Bencic paced the Hawks with a new state record in the 200 yard freestyle with a 1:48.22 time. She won back-to-back titles in that event as well as the 500 yard freestyle. Carrie was also on Hawken's championship 200 yard freestyle relay team, which set a new state record time of 1:34.99. Seniors Sarah Koucheki, Marissa Cominelli and Caroline Vexler were also on that team. Find out which standout student athletes are competing this week
Two schools in the community show up frequently on the list of teams and competitors in the Ohio State Swimming Tournament. Hawken School will be represented 35 times in various events in the Division II tournaments for boys and girls. Mayfield High School is listed nine times. Hawken has four girls swimming in the 200 Yard Freestyle, 200 Yard Individual Medley and 500 Yard Freestyle events. The school also leads the seeding for the Women's 200 and 400 Yard Freestyle Relays. The tournament begins at 9 a.m. today at the C.T. Branin Natatorium. It continues through Saturday.
