School Snow Closings: Here's How Mayfield Decides

Whether to stay open is a tough call, superintendent says.

How do district officials make the hard decision whether bad weather should close Mayfield City Schools? The choice affect thousands of people, from the administration, teaching staff and other employees to the working parents of young students who may need to make emergency child care arrangements. “The weather patterns here in Cleveland, along Lake Erie and near the Snow Belt can be down‐right unpredictable,” district Superintendent Keith Kelly said in an article on the district's web site. “The decision to stay open or to closed is a tough one. We make the best decision based on the most accurate information we have at that time." When heavy snow, arctic temperatures or an ice storm hit, the decision-making process usually starts about …

The Blizzard of '78: Share Your Memories, Photos

Thirty-five years ago this week, the Blizzard of '78 paralyzed Ohio, Michigan and Indiana.

With temperatures peaking in the upper 50s this week in Cleveland, it’s a perfect example of how unpredictable the weather can be. Thirty-five years ago this week, the “Blizzard of ‘78” struck; a stark contrast to this week's weather. Formally referred to as the Great Blizzard of 1978,  dumped more than a foot of snow from January 25-27.  That was accompanied by temperatures dipping to 0 and wind gusts of up to 48 mph, according to the National Weather Service’s storm review. The blizzard was deemed the worst in Ohio history, resulting in 51 deaths. More than 50,000 members of the Ohio National Guard were called in to make numerous rescues and for the first time ever, the entire Ohio Turnpike was closed down. Michigan declared a state of …

More Snow Coming This Week

Meteorologists are predicting another one to two feet of snow for parts of the region, according to meteorologists

The National Weather Service has issued a lake effect snow watch in Cuyahoga County, saying that parts of the region could receive between one and two feet of snow between Wednesday and late Friday night. The snow will be precipitated by a strong cold front that will cause an arctic airmass to settle over the region until the end of the week. The lake effect snow is expected to begin overnight and get worse Thursday. Meteorologists are saying that areas closest to the Lake Erie shoreline will likely be the most affected. Areas further inland may get between six and 12 inches of snow. However, the shoreline could receive between one and two feet of snow. The snow will be accompanied by winds between 15 and 25 mph with gusts up to 35 mph. …

Good tips. And the people who are afraid to drive and go ridiculously slow are as dangerous as the ones who think they can go full speed. But some patience is needed. I had someone ride up on me the other day and flash lights when I was going about 60 mph in the snow and I was going to pass someone in 10-15 seconds. I wasn't going to change lanes through a bunch of crap twice in a short time just…   more ›
