Students participated in the holiday donation that supplies women in need with toiletries and other items to assist them on their journey to be independent.
On Dec. 11 students of Millridge Elementary and Millridge Center for Hearing Impaired (MCHI) decorated 66 lunch bags filled with toiletries to be sent to women in need. The festive bags were filled with soap, toothbrushes, shampoo and other grooming articles, collected from the students, staff and families for the non-profit Transitional Housing, Inc. Located at 1545 West 25th Street in Cleveland the organization provides assistance, housing and programs to promote self-sufficiency among homeless women. The school's children collected hundreds of pajamas for those in need.
This week Millridge Elementary Teacher Kelly Sanelli will be dropping off 463 pairs of pajamas collected by the Millridge and MCHI students, staff and local businesses for those in need. With a matching donation from Carter's the total donation will be 926 pajamas. The campaign ended Nov. 19 and was primarily for the Hurricane Sandy victims. However, in light of an overwhelming response, the student's efforts may benefit Cleveland area families. “The Pajama Program is experiencing an overflow of pajama's in the East. So our donations will help others in need,” said Sanelli who was happy with the success of the drive. Overall Sanelli said the drive taught the children life lessons. “It opened their eyes. Leftovers are being turned into compost for school's garden.
Garbage doesn't go to waste at Millridge Elementary School, where a volunteer group of students have been collecting table scraps to fill compost containers. Teachers Amy Hillis, Julie Slisz and Lisa Webb have coordinated the composting effort, which was proposed to the school by the Highland Heights Green Task Force. Since April 23, a crew of 22 students have gone down the cafeteria aisles with buckets, gathering leftover food that's suitable for composting. "They've learned what is OK – no meat, no dairy," Slisz said. The result is an average of 9.6 pounds of food a day – about 240 pounds total – that has been diverted from the landfill. "I have to say I'm very impressed with everything," Highland Heights Green Task Force President Judy …
