Algiers Drive Residents Evacuated During Garage Fire: Mayfield Heights Police Blotter

The following information was supplied by the Mayfield Heights Police Department

Incidents reported May 3: Fire on Algiers: A garage fire caused Mayfield Police to close Algiers Drive for about 40 minutes and evacuate residents the morning of May 3. A resident on the street reported smoke showing from the home's garage at 11:12 a.m. According to police, the garage became fully involved about two minutes later. Propane tanks were near the garage and a car was parked near it. Homes in the area were evacuated. Mayfield's fire chief and captain were advised of the fire, but it was out within 10 minutes. No injuries were reported. Gift card theft: A security guard at Target female employee on May 3 for stealing gift cards from the big-box retailer. An officer arrested her and brought her back to the station.

Mayfield Heights Fire Department Has Record Year

Workers handled the most calls in the department's history.

The Mayfield Heights Fire Department ended 2012 with 3,399 calls. That's the most calls in the department's history and a 3.5 percent increase over 2011, the city reported on its Facebook page. The city's Building Department issued 2,530 permits or licenses in 2012. The city said on its Facebook post that more statistics will be disclosed in the winter edition of the City Focus newsletter. The publication is due to be mailed the first part of February, the city said.
