We know Christmas is a big time for retailers, but how big? And just where did all those toys under the nation's trees this morning come from? Here is a by-the-numbers look at Christmas, courtesy of U.S. Census Bureau. Rush to the Stores $27.2 billion: Retail sales by the nation’s department stores (including leased departments) in December 2010. This represented a 44 percent jump from the previous month. Where is Santa now? Check his progress with NORAD
Has Santa left the North Pole yet? When will he get here? No need to check the skies around Hillcrest Patch tonight to see if the Jolly Old Elf is on his way. You can find out at NORAD Tracks Santa, a website that keeps tabs on Santa's progress with official military tracking equipment. The site also uses Google Earth for a 3-D look at Santa's sleigh during his journey. The North American Aerospace Defense Command (NORAD) usually uses its high-tech tracking powers to watch for air and missile attacks. But on Christmas Eve, the government agency adds Santa tracking to its list of duties. It uses four high-tech systems to track Santa – radar, satellites, Santa cams and fighter jets. Employees at Parker Hannifin Corporation's headquarters in Mayfield Heights loaded 407 bicycles into two FedEx trucks Thursday for delivery through the U.S. Marine Corps Reserve Toys for Tots program. The bicycles will be distributed to chlidren in Ashtabula, Cuyahoga, Geauga, Lake, Lorain and Summit counties. U.S. Marine Corps Sgt. Tim Sherman, a Toys for Tots local coordinator, was impressed by the volume of the donation. "I was overwhelmed with the number of bikes you said we'd receive," he said at the donation presentation in the lobby of the Parker Hannifin building. Members of the Highland Heights Lions Club will be driving around town from dusk to 10:30 p.m. Friday for the club's annual Holiday Lighting Contest. Judges will chose one winner from each of the city's four wards. Winners will be given plaques and signs will be placed on their lawns. The contest has been running for more than 20 years as a way to encourage community involvement. Contestants do not need to enter – club members simply view holiday lighting displays and decide which are the best.

Choir, band, ensembles will perform.
Notre Dame College will present its annual Christmas concert at 7 p.m. today in the Regina Auditorium at the college, 4545 College Rd., South Euclid. This year marks the first time the band and instrumental ensembles will take part in a joint performance with the choir. The free concert will feature a mix of choir and band selections, with select ensembles performing throughout the program. The audience will be invited to add their voices at the end of the show. Highland Heights seniors celebrated the holiday season at the annual Commission on Aging Holiday Get Together at the community center. Mary Velotta, the city's senior liaison and longtime employee, said the event's been held as long as she's been with the city. "This is the Commission on Aging's big event. We also have a picnic and health fair," she said. Velotta said. The holiday party gives everyone, especially widows and widowers, a chance to gather and celebrate. "They come and have fellowship and enjoy one another's company," she said. In addition to lunch from Biagio's Deli, guests were treated to entertainment by Italian singer Carmelina.
