Hillcrest Rotary Club Hosts Annual Speech Contest

Nick Kane of Mayfield High wins first place.

The Rotary Club of Hillcrest Sunrise once again challenged area students to put themselves to the test in a speech contest built around Rotary members' code of conduct. Rotary Club members follow a four-way test of the things they think, say and do in their personal and professional lives – Is it the truth? Is it fair to all concerned? Will it build goodwill and better friendships? Will it be beneficial to all concerned? The speech contest awarded cash scholarships from $50 to $150 to students who give presentations incorporating the four-way test. "There's a difference between winning a success and being a success," said club member Joseph Kamiab, who introduced the contestants. Winners this year were: • First place – Nick Kane of …

Hillcrest Rotary Sunrise Club Delivers Coats to Homeless People

About 50 coats donated at St. Augustine in Cleveland.

Following the club's motto of "service above self," members of the Hillcrest Rotary Sunrise Club gathered up about 50 coats and donated them to homeless people to help them keep a little warmer this winter. Club members contributed coats that were in good condition, but maybe weren't worn very often. Rather than give them to a nonprofit organization, the intent was to hand them out directly to the people needing them. "Our original plan was to drop them off to homeless people as we saw them on the street," Rotary club member Anthony Corrao said. However, uncertain weather might have made it difficult to find intended recipients, so club members instead took the coats to St. Augustine Church, which has a homeless shelter and a hunger center…

Rotary Gives Guests A Taste of Hillcrest

About 600 people attend annual fundraiser.

The 11th annual A Taste of Hillcrest attracted about 600 people to Executive Caterers at Landerhaven on Thursday to sample food from 20 area restaurants. The event, a combined effort of the noon and sunrise chapters of the Rotary Club of Hillcrest, is the group's biggest fundraiser of the year. Sue Hinkle attended for the first time this year to support her neighbor, Michael LaMarca of Master Pizza, and was impressed with the event. "It's lovely," she said. "I'm definitely coming back again next year." That kind of loyalty has helped A Taste of Hillcrest grow from its first year in a hangar at Cuyahoga County Airport. "It started as a way to raise money to purchase AEDs (automatic external defibrillators)," said Tom Mugridge, event …

Hillcrest Rotary Helps 'Children of the Dump'

Shoeboxes of supplies sent to Nicaragua

Members of the Rotary Club of Hillcrest-Sunrise shipped off 54 boxes of school supplies, clothes, toys and other items to help out the "children of the dump" in Chinandega, Nicaragua. Rotary International has been providing assistance to the area since finding out about the conditions there about 12 years ago. "Some members went down there and found these kids who are living off the dump, scavenging for food," said Michael Johns Jr., president of the Hillcrest-Sunrise Rotary chapter. Rotary members helped get a school built and collect shoeboxes annually to provide essentials to students. Hillcrest-Sunrise was one of 12 local chapters that put together shoeboxes, which were headed to Michigan before being shipped to Texas by Walmart. "The …

Rotary Club of Hillcrest Hosts Picnic to Thank Teachers

Special needs students, teachers treated to lunch

The Rotary Club of Hillcrest, noon and Sunrise chapters, combined to host a picnic for special needs students and teachers at Lander Elementary School. The annual event, which has been going on for more than 20 years, took place Tuesday at the Cleveland Metroparks North Chagrin Reservation. Students and teachers ate cheeseburgers, played baseball and listened to Rotary member Pastor Roger Korsten of Highland Sixth Presbyterian Church as he played his guitar and sang. Event organizer Joe DeLibero said it started as a winter sledding party. "Some of the teachers thought it was too cold in January, so we moved it to Februrary. Then we kept moving it back," he said. "It's worked out much nicer," said teacher Diane Hunziker. "The children look …
