Rough Start to Season For Lancers

Gilmour Academy falls to Beachwood, gets top QB next

This was not the start Gilmour Academy had in mind for football season, getting grounded down and sustaining a couple injuries along the way in the season opener at home. And to make things even rosier, one of the mightiest quarterbacks around pays a visit from Tuscarawas Central Catholic this Saturday. It would appear as though the 2012 campaign hasn’t been much fun so far, but Lancers coach Shawn Dodd is undaunted. “They’re hungry. It was easy to get a good practice out of them. We’re not looking for moral victories. They weren’t happy about losing a close one or just playing a tight game. They want to win,” Dodd said. Going back to last Saturday, Beachwood’s Jordan Lane had two rushing touchdowns and Nate Hamilton had one of his own. …

Wright Ready For A New Season

Gilmour Academy junior sees playoffs in Lancers' future

Gilmour Academy’s athletic teams wear blue and white, just in case you don’t know. Well, one guy walked into Weber Stadium after football practice this week and actually had the nerve to display a Shaker Heights jersey of red and black draped across his back. Noticing this infraction, AJ Wright’s competitive nature flashed at the sight of it. “Walking in red around here is a big no-no,” Wright intoned. The Lancers’ star defensive end and tight end speaks softly but carries a huge frame, listed at 6-foot-3 and 220 pounds. Wright will put all of his power and finesse on display this Saturday afternoon as Gilmour Academy opens its season at home against Beachwood at 2 p.m. Wright, a junior, had quite a year last season in football despite …

Gilmour Academy Football Coach Keeps Aim Forward

After a rough season, Dodd ready for new challenges for Lancers

The only place Gilmour Academy football coach Shawn Dodd can look is up – after all, a 1-9 record the season before tends to have that kind of impact on a person’s psyche. A coach tries not to dwell on the details of such misery, like an ill-timed injury, a tough schedule or the right break here or there that would’ve changed things for the better. Dodd and the Lancers just carry onward, getting prepared for the upcoming season with two-a-day practices this week in preparation for their season opener against Beachwood on Aug. 25. Coming into this season, he’s retained most of last year’s squad, a little humbled but wiser for the experience that disappointment brings. Dodd, 39, believes he might have a few top-level performers on his squad …

Gilmour Academy Football Starts Anew

After a rough season, hopes are higher this year

The Gilmour Academy football team is in the process of preparing itself for another season, but certainly not like the one that occurred last season. Last year’s final tally – 1-9. Yup, it’s time to move on. The Lancers are in the midst of two-a-day practice sessions and will have its first scrimmage against St. Peter Chanel on Friday at Weber Stadium where the guys are working out. Spirits are much higher as the team is returning a fair amount of players eager to improve upon last year’s showing. As is often the case in football, more experience usually means better results. The Lancers open the season hosting Beachwood on Saturday, Aug 25. Here are a few images from their workouts.

Chefs' Tasting Event Helps Harvest for Hunger

Hillcrest Hospital raised more than $1,000 from lunch benefit.

Hospital food no longer gets the bad rap it once did, but it's still not usually as varied as what the Hillcrest Hospital cafeteria served up for lunch recently. Billed as Chefs' Tasting Event: International Food Fest, the benefit for Harvest for Hunger featured six stations with entrees and side dishes. For $5, guests could get samples from all six, or they could settle for a tasting at $1 each. The food was prepared by teams from AVI Foodsystems servicing Cleveland Clinic system hospitals and Gilmour Academy. Among entrees they prepared were penette al salmon, pasta with sun-dried tomato pesto and feta cheese, wiener schnitzel with a lemon butter sauce and coffee and whole grain mustard crusted pork loin. About 300 people sample the food…
