Mayfield's Drew Teller Is the Key to Boys Basketball Victory

Scores 22 points in 64-54 win

The Mayfield Wildcats boys' basketball team is 7-3 in the Northeastern Ohio Conference after a 64-54 victory Friday over the Valley Forge Patriots. Setting the pace for Mayfield was 5-foot-2 sophomore guard Amiri Williams, who easily penetrated the paint to add points for the Wildcats. Pressure defense was played by both teams and Mayfield was able to set defensive traps to hold the Patriots to a 20-12 score at the end of the first quarter. Mayfield opened the second quarter with possession, but missed two consecutive layups on the same play, which enabled Valley Forge to stay in the game. Mayfield Boys' Basketball Team on Winning Streak

Five straight victories improve record to 6-3

Coming off a 12-9 season in 2009-10, the Mayfield boys' basketball team came into this season as a bit of an unknown quantity. After all, this was a young team with just two seniors and two players with varsity experience. But after a slow start, the Wildcats have won five straight games to improve to 6-3 overall and 3-1 in the Lake Division in the Northeast Ohio Conference. The latest win came at the expense of host Nordonia, 69-60. It was yet another demonstration of the quick maturation of the team under coach Keith Leffler, now in his fourth season at the helm. “We got up by nine points at halftime, then Nordonia went on a 14-1 run but we countered with a 13-2 run,” Leffler said. “We have a balanced scoring attack.
