Police Awarded Motorcycle for 9/11 Ride

The Mayfield Heights Police Department was recognized for the participation in the 9/11 commemorative ride.

For Special Patrolman Thomas Rovniak America's 911 Foundation's yearly motorcycle ride represents more than a remembrance of the horrific events that took place on Sept. 11, 2001. Being an escorting officer for the foundation’s 1,000 civilian riders to the crash sites in Pennsylvania, Virginia, and New York is an act of honor for Rovniak. “I participate in the ride because my friend's sister was killed in the World Trade Center and to help the foundation,” said Rovniak. “She introduced me to my wife. So the ride is to honor her, her family and all those who were victims.” This year Rovniak and Sergeant Robert Bandelow's service earned the Mayfield Heights Police Department a new Harley-Davidson Motorcycle which was unveiled behind the …

9/11 Anniversary: Ohioans Encouraged to Fly Flags at Half-Staff, Observe Moment of Silence

The White House is also encouraging citizens to volunteer

Ohioans are encouraged to fly the flag at half-staff on Tuesday in remembrance of those who lost their lives in the terrorist attacks on Sept. 11, 2001. Sept. 11 has been declared Patriot Day and the National Day of Service and Remembrance. In a proclamation to the country, President Barack Obama has asked citizens to remember the “abiding spirit of compassion” that filled the nation after the attacks by volunteering in the upcoming days. “Even the simplest act of kindness can be a way to honor those we have lost, and to help build stronger communities and a more resilient Nation. By joining together on this solemn anniversary, let us show that America's sense of common purpose need not be a fleeting moment, but a lasting virtue -- not …

9/11 Anniversary: Sept. 11 Monument at Lake View Cemetery

The American Heroes Monument, constructed around a piece of steel from the World Trade Center, is located at the Mayfield Road entrance. Lake View is open to the public from 7:30 a.m. to 5:30 p.m.

A single white rose was displayed on top of the American Heroes Monument at Lake View Cemetery Monday, Sept. 10, a day before the 11th anniversary of the Sept. 11 attacks. The monument, dedicated Sept. 11, 2004, honors the victims of the Sept. 11, 2001, attacks and also those who "protect our freedoms and sacrifice their lives to preserve the spirit of America." "While we remember the tragic day of Sept. 11, 2001, with the monument, it also honors the public safety forces, police, fire and EMS who put their lives on the line for all of us on a daily basis," said Mary Krohmer, director of community relations for the Lake View Cemetery Foundation. The monument was constructed around a piece of steel from the World Trade Center, and it …

9/11 a Somber Day to Me for More Reasons Than One

I miss my dad on this day, too

It’s been almost impossible to read the news or turn on the TV these past few weeks without being reminded of the horror of Sept. 11, 2001. Yesterday was marked by thousands of memorials nationwide to remember those killed that day 10 years go. For me and my family, there’s an added sadness to the day. It’s the day my dad died three years ago. He was 69. I was eight months pregnant with our first child. I wanted so badly for him to hang on so he could at least meet his newest grandchild. He had waited 40 years to see me pregnant, and this was supposed to be a joyous time. Instead, my husband and I made the long drive to New Jersey for his funeral to say goodbye.  I stood at the wake, my hands cupped around my belly filled with life, and …

St. Paschal Baylon Has Patriot Day Observance Sunday

Masses, Ministry Fair, prayer service are planned.

Remembrance and reconciliation will be the themes on Sunday as St. Paschal Baylon Church in Highland Heights observes the 10th anniversary of the Sept. 11 attacks. The Rev. John Thomas Lane, St. Paschal Baylon pastor, said the parish has done something in honor of Patriot Day each year since it was officially named a holiday under former President George W. Bush. "Because it's on a Sunday this year, we're able to tie Mass to it," he added. "It just so happens that the readings for Mass that day tie in very well." The Rev. Lane said his message to parishioners is that Jesus taught us to forgive and that, while we remember those who lost their lives, we should make the observance a positive one and forgive those responsible for the attacks…

'Moms Talk' Q & A: How Do You Address 9/11 With Children?

10th anniversary of attacks attracting more attention

Each week the council will answer a question on parenthood posed to them by readers or another member of council. This week, the Mom Councils members talk about how to address the Sept. 11, 2001, terrorist attacks with children. With the additional attention being given to the 10th anniversary, a whole new set of children will be asking questions. Let's see what the moms have to say: Kim Zannetti: Our children were 3 at the time. They really don't remember too much about it. They did question why someone would hate people so much to kill so many. We took the approach that there are many more decent, good people who help others and want to see the good in people. We pointed to the heroic response of our country and how people really pulled …
