Will play Mentor at 4:30 p.m. today.
Mayfield High defeated Willoughby South 4-2 on Wednesday to advance to the baseball Division I Euclid District final. The Wildcats, 22-4 on the season, took an early lead on Willoughby South with single runs in the first and second innings on a sacrifice fly by Larry Pinto and ground out by Justin Bonchek, respectively. Both came with the bases loaded and Mayfield threatened to put the game away. Still, that was enough to win behind a strong outing by starting pitcher Matt Iosue, who held Willoughby South hitless until the seventh and final inning. The district final will be at 4:30 p.m. against Mentor, which defeated Shaker Heights 3-0 on Wednesday.

And Patch had a blast at our draft party at Solon Panini's!
Patch came to Solon Panini's and cheered on the Browns as they drafted two offensive weapons. The Browns took running back Trent Richardson with the third pick -- they traded up from the fourth pick to snag the Alabama star -- and quarterback Brandon Weeden with the 22nd pick. We also signed up new readers for our daily e-mail newsletter, gave away some free appetizers and Panini's gift cards and generally had a good time! We hosted a live chat during the draft -- you can find the transcript here. Thanks to Solon Panini's for hosting our event! Go Browns!

Event raises awareness and funds for autism research.
Gilmour Academy's varsity softball team will kick off its Swing for a Solution campaign when it hosts Ashtabula Edgewood High School for a 4:30 p.m. game today. This is the third season for Swing for a Solution, which has raised more than $4,000 for the nonprofit organization Autism Speaks. Money is raised through the sale of apparel, with $5 from each item donated to Autism Speaks. Kristy Booher, junior varsity softball coach, created Swing for a Solution to show support for varsity assistant Mandy Hansen, whose 8-year-old son, Michael, is autistic. "Mandy and I have been friends since we were 7 years old. We actually met playing softball and continue to play the sport on the same summer team to this day," Booher said. "What better way to…

National letters of intent signed by four students.
Four Gilmour Academy students, including Marissa Cangelosi of Highland Heights, will be playing sports at colleges next fall. Cangelosi, Duncan DeFino of Lyndhurst, Julie Parker of Bellingham, WA, and Carolyn Curran of University Heights signed NCAA letters of intent Wednesday at the Gilmour Academy Athletic Center. A third baseman on the softball team, Cangelosi will be attending Wheeling Jesuit University in Wheeling, WV. "They have a phenomenal nursing program," she said. Cangelosi also liked the small school atmosphere. "There's such a community there. You feel like a family," said Cangelosi, who had her dad, Jerry, and mom, Sue, with her at the signing. Cangelosi made Honor Roll six out of seven semesters and is involved in two …

Hi, Ron, Much as we'd like to have parties in each of our Patches, we don't have the staff to cover every one for an event like this, which will require at least four Patch employees to pull off. We'll be in Mentor for another type of event soon, and we hope you'll join us then. And we'd love to have you take part in our chat tonight. Thanks for commenting.   more ›
