Mayfield Grad Plans to Launch Music Therapy Private Practice

After graduating with music therapy degree, Seneca Block wants to use his talent to help others in the area

Editor's note: This story was updated at 11 a.m. Seneca Block's business plan and true joy has its roots in a day he initially dreaded. Five years ago, the music therapy degree holder took his mom to a chemotherapy treatment appointment at Hillcrest Hospital. Unsurprisingly, he saw a bunch of sad faces in the lobby — until he sat at a grand piano. "I'm like a moth attracted to light when I see a piano," the 2005 Mayfield High School graduate explained. "I started playing a little melody and got bolder and bolder. Everyone was smiling and rocking with the music. At that moment, it was like a light bulb." Now, Block celebrates his graduation from the Berklee College of Music in Boston. Upon returning to Northeast Ohio, he'll participate in …

He is a young man of great talent, clinical instinct and integrity that will make a tremendous contribution to your community. Thank you for posting this article so that we could continue to follow …   more ›

Mayfield Students Earns Perfect ACT Score

Tom Milyo is one of 781 students in the nation who scored a 36

Tom Milyo makes no big deal of his stress-free approach to standardized testing. It's an easygoing mentality he has always possessed, and it has worked wonders for the Mayfield High School junior. The school district recently announced that Tom achieved a perfect score on his ACT test. According to the district, he is just the fifth Mayfield student to earn a perfect 36 in the last six years. Of the 1.66 million students who took the ACT in 2012, only Tom and 780 others earned a perfect composite score. "I try to relax the night before — I'm not going to learn anything I haven't learned the night before," he said. "I figure one night's not going to make the difference, so I go to bed early." Tom, who also runs track and cross country for …

Future of Old Mayfield Library Property Remains Uncertain

Let us know what you think should be the future use of the Wilson Mills road property

The future of the old Mayfield Library on Wilson Mills Road remains uncertain following a relocation a few weeks ago. Staff members and volunteers moved the collection and machinery from the former location to an $11.7 million library at 500 SOM Center Road. Mayfield City Schools owns the building at 6080 Wilson Mills Road, but officials have not decided what to do with property. "The site is being evaluated for a future educational use," district spokeswoman Laurie Uhlir said. "No decisions or plans have been discussed. "It’s merely the “brainstorming phase.” The response leaves the door open to a myriad of options that could center around one or multiple areas of education or serve a purpose for extra curricular activities. How would you…
