Police Blotter: Cannon Reported Stolen from Garage Sale

Information supplied by the Mayfield Village Police Department.

A cannon was reported stolen from a garage sale at 10:28 a.m. May 13 on Norman Lane. The suspects were two men in their 30s driving an old, beat-up black sedan. Police said the cannon was not full-size and was a novelty item. A resident came to the police station at 8:37 p.m. May 13 to report that marijuana plants that had been in the park the previous day were no longer there. Police said the man has bipolar disorder and was off his medication, but was otherwise OK. A groundhog was seen under a back deck at 10:39 a.m. May 14 at a Woodlane Drive house. Police Blotter: Bicyclist Hit by Car at Chagrin River and Brigham

A 911 caller at 4:32 p.m. May 8 reported that a bicyclist was hit by at car at the intersection of Chagrin River and Brigham roads. The bicyclist, a 60-year-old Highland Heights man, was taken to Hillcrest Hospital. The driver of the car, a 75-year-old Gates Mills man, was cited for failing to yield the right of way when turning left. A disabled truck was reported at 12:48 p.m. May 10 on Mayfield Road. Police checked and said the truck went off the road and hit several signs. The driver, a 45-year-old man from Chagrin Falls, was cited for failing to maintain reasonable control of his vehicle. An employee at Gilmour Academy called at 7:33 p.m. May 10 to report criminal mischief. A small fire had been started in the girls' locker room and …

Police Blotter: Man Passed Out in Police Car

A caller said an older man was intoxicated and uncooperative outside Panini's Bar & Grille at 11:41 p.m. May 9. The man passed out in the back of a police cruiser. He was cited for disorderly conduct and taken to Hillcrest Hospital. A Westerham Road woman called police at 3:32 p.m. May 9 and said jewelry was missing from her house. She was unsure when it was taken. An unresponsive man was sitting on a bench in front of Walmart at 8:54 a.m. May 9.  Several people tried to wake him up, according to a caller. Police said the man had a diabetic reaction. A brother and sister were fighting at 10:34 p.m. May 7 on Iroquois Avenue. Hillcrest 100 Donates to Michl Scholarship Fund

Mayfield Heights Police Department Sgt. Gregory Michl will be honored with a memorial scholarship fund. Michl, whose accomplishments included starting the Juvenile Diversion Program, died on March 6, 2011. Kathy Michl, his wife of 26 years, was presented with a $1,000 check for the scholarship fund at Monday's City Council meeting. The money was donated by Hillcrest 100, a nonprofit organization supporting area first responders in Mayfield Heights, Mayfield Village, Highland Heights, Gates Mills, Lyndhurst and Richmond Heights. Michl said a scholarship fund was a fitting tribute to her husband. Buckle Up For Burgers and Eat Free at Sonic

The national Click It or Ticket seat belt campaign will kick off by rewarding people with free burgers for buckling up. From 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. on Thursday, May 17, free burger coupons will be passed out to all car occupants spotted wearing seat belts when entering the parking lot at Sonic Drive-In, 5836 Mayfield Rd., Mayfield Heights. The Sonic in Parma also will be participating at the same time and police officers will be at both locations helping to deliver the burgers. Police Blotter: Motorists Tried to Catch Dogs That Ran Across Highway

Mayfield Village police relayed information from a call received at 7:28 p.m. May 9 about three cars stopped on Interstate 271 near White Road. The occupants of the cars were pointing at the woods and one of the cars was too close to the freeway and causing a hazard. One of the persons who pulled over told police that she saw two dogs run across the road and into the woods. Police said both dogs were returned to the owner at Maypine Farms. An off-duty Cleveland Heights officer called at 9:32 p.m. May 9 to report a possible drunken driver heading south on Bishop Road. The car was stopped and the driver was eating an ice cream cone. There's no shortage of bizarre police calls and charges in Northeast Ohio. We'll gather the zaniest of the region each Sunday in this Best of the Blotter column. All information was provided by police reports from departments in Patch communities. Questioned in the Nude: Twinsburg Police didn't learn much about a stolen-money accusation on May 3, but they were exposed to a naked man. The unexpected showing occurred during officers' second trip to the Warren Parkway residence that day. Police came earlier because a woman was screaming for help outside. Police Blotter: Man Missed Work Because He Was In Jail

An employer called on May 2 and wanted police to check the welfare of a Maplewood Road resident, who had not been to work in Highland Heights since April 26 and was not answering his cell phone. The man had never missed work before. Police told the caller that the man was in jail. A Marsol Road man reported at 3:30 p.m. May 5 that juveniles were throwing sticks onto his balcony. Police talked to two juveniles and the parents of one of the kids. A Belrose Road resident called at 11:27 p.m. May 4 to complain that a neighbor was playing basketball in the driveway next to his bedroom window. Police talked to the neighbor. 'Pigeon Drop' Scam Hitting Area

Suspects stop shoppers and show what appears to be large sum of money.

Police warn residents that a "pigeon drop" scam has been reported in the area. Mayfield Heights Detective Joe Leskovec said that he's heard from detectives in other cities that this scam has been attempted recently. He said all cases involved an older black male and a well-dressed black female. The suspects approach people in shopping centers and show them a large sum of money, which is actually a $20 or $100 bill wrapped around a large amount of counterfeit bills. They seek elderly people and say they are a bank employee or other important person and they ask the victim if they dropped the money. They then ask for help finding the money's owner and offer to split the cash if the owner can't be found. The victim is asked to go to the bank …

Police Blotter: Homeless Man was Relaxing in Driveway

A caller at 8:35 a.m. May 7 said a man was sitting in a chair in the driveway next door to his daughter's home on Wilson Mills Road. He said they didn't know the man, who was described as elderly and wearing light-colored pants and carrying a blue bag. Police spoke to the neighbor, but the man was no longer there. He was found a few minutes later near the city park. Police said the man was homeless and living in a Wickliffe motel. He was meeting a relative at a garden center. A woman called at 10:48 a.m. May 8 and wanted to speak to an officer about a scam she thought police should know about. The scam involved a man who told her she won a prize and told her to send money. Police were told that someone was cutting grass at 11:55 p.m. May 6…
