Cleveland's Michael Symon Writes Love Letter to Hometown

Read the letter and tell us what you love about Cleveland

Chef Michael Symon, owner of Eton Plaza's B-Spot and other area restaurants, showed a little emotion and a lot of Cleveland pride in a touching love letter to Cleveland for The Huffington Post today. Raised in North Olmsted and a graduate of Lakewood's St. Edward High School, he reminisces about places all over the area: I remember when I was young and I would spend my entire weekends with you and my grandfather: heading to the Eastside and staying with my grandparents; taking the rapid Downtown; shopping at the Westside Market with all its fabulous aromas of smoked meats and baked breads. It is here I found my true love for food, for going to the historic Terminal Tower to pick up my Grandma at Higbees and heading back east to cook split …

Cleveland and the surrounding area has it all! Moved here in '96 from FL and have never looked back. You never run out of things to do, places to see, and it's beautiful too. Some areas look like Europe or New England -- charming towns with gazebos and commons. There's so much to do and the summers are glorious! Fall too! I love the sun shining on crystal snow and huge snowflakes falling! I've …   more ›

Union President Says Romney Not a Leader: Letter to the Editor

What do you think about this Service Employees International union president's open letter to GOP presidential candidate Mitt Romney?

Dear Mr. Romney: Your welcoming letter to President Obama felt a little sketchy to me. I remember, as I am certain my fellow Ohioans remember, you supporting actions, or in many cases inaction, which would have cost Ohioans their jobs, their homes and their rights. You, Mr. Romney, made it clear that you don't understand how average Ohioans live and support their families.  That is why you did not support the auto industry bail out and in fact said "Let Detroit go bankrupt."  Unlike you, President Obama understands that the auto industry is the backbone of livable-wage jobs for Ohio's middle class and without those jobs they could not feed their families or pay their mortgages. That is why President Obama bet on the America worker and as a…

Brecksville Bomb Plot: What You're Saying About Whodunit

FBI arrested five men Monday night who officials say had a plan to blow up a bridge in Brecksville.

Five men were arrested by the FBI Monday night on charges they planned to blow up a bridge in Brecksville's portion of the Cuyahoga Valley National Park. The FBI said in a press release the public was not in danger, and an undercover FBI employee had controlled the explosive devices. In addition, the explosives were inoperable. Arrested were: Brandon L. Baxter, 20, of Lakewood; Anthony Hayne, 35, of Cleveland; Joshua S. Stafford, 23, of Cleveland; Connor C. Stevens, 20, of Berea; and Douglas L. Wright, 26, of Indianapolis. The five men each were charged with one count of conspiracy and one count of attempted use of an explosive, said Mike Tobin, public affairs specialist for the U.S. Department of Justice, Northern District of Ohio. …

A great number of people, including myself, immigrated to this country in the past 50 years from Europe and elsewhere, with much difficulty enduring great hardship, all because knowing that any life they can build here will be better than what they've left behind. My advice to all American friends who hate their country is to reverse-migrate to mine--anywhere in Eastern Europe-- or Northern …   more ›

'Moms Talk' Q & A: What Do You Think About The Hunger Games Controversy?

Book series and movie have been challenged for their violence.

Each week the council will answer a question on parenthood posed to them by readers or another member of council. This week, the Moms Council talks about The Hunger Games and whether the topic's suitable for children. Not being familiar with the books, I really didn't know what the fuss was about when the movie was released. It reminded me about the criticism of the Harry Potter books, only with violence being questioned rather than magic or fantasy being a danger. Now that The Hunger Games remains the top box office draw, a lot of parents have to be wondering if a battle to the death scenario's appropriate fare for their children. Here's what the Moms had to say: Susan Jerome: My concern is much more broad than just this trilogy. I am …

So What Will You Do When You Win the $500 Mega Millions Jackpot Friday?

Buy an island? Travel? So many decisions.

So what will you do with your $500 million? Someone will win a record-setting Mega Millions jackpot -- if not on Friday, then an even bigger prize later. It's easy to think of how you'd spend $1 million or so. But that much cash? Wow, so many decisions to make. Would you move to another state? Another country? Or would you stay put in Northeast Ohio? Of course, you'd give a lot away. What charities would get some big bucks? Any vengeance plans, like buying the company you work for and firing the bosses? What luxury items would be the first on your list?

I would buy property away from a college town and leave Kent in a heart beat. I would pay off my children's homes and pay off my car and buy my sport car.   more ›

Moms Talk' Q & A: What are Your Favorite Places to Take the Family to Eat?

Everyone can participate in poll starting Thursday.

Each week the council will answer a question on parenthood posed to them by readers or another member of council. This week, the Moms Council weighs in on the topic of this week's Readers' Choice survey – Where do you take the kids out to eat? You can vote on a poll that will be posted Thursday morning. I talked to one mom whose children were very excited when Sonic Drive-In came to town because they had such a fun experience one time when they went to another restaurant with carhop service. But it doesn't have to be a place to a special attraction or a playground or a fast-food joint. I'm sure many families enjoy going to a sit-down meal at a family restaurant. Here's what the Moms had to say: Kim Zannetti: Yours Truly has a nice menu for…

Guest Column: "Establishing Laws Necessary for Ohio’s Casino Operation"

The state representative discusses a bill related to the opening of casinos in Ohio.

The following column by State Representative Marlene Anielski was submitted by her office to Patch: Establishing Laws Necessary for Ohio’s Casino Operation As casinos are in the process of being built in Cleveland, Toledo, Columbus and Cincinnati, the Ohio House of Representatives recently passed a bill that further implements and clarifies issues associated with gambling. Among the provisions in House Bill 386 are establishing new laws to casinos, video lottery terminals, horse racing and the state lottery.   The bill primarily established language and guidelines that are necessary before the casinos can officially open later this year. The existence of casinos in Ohio can go a long way toward improving our economy both by giving Ohioans …

'Moms Talk' Q & A: What Should You Do If Your Child Lies?

Parents stress importance of telling the truth.

Each week the council will answer a question on parenthood posed to them by readers or another member of council. This week, the Moms Council addresses how to respond when you catch a child lying. Here's what the Moms had to say: Susan Jerome: I can't say I actually "caught" them in a lie. I have doubted what they say, as the truth, sometimes but really can't say, for sure, if they were lying. One of my children has a tendency to exaggerate and I have questioned that because the story was just too unbelievable. I tried to determine what made the child tell the tale. Were they looking for attention and so told this story? Were they scared and using this as a way to explain their feelings? I also talked about the consequences of telling …

'Moms Talk' Q & A: Should Smoking Be Banned in Cars With Young Children?

Legislation is being considered by Ohio Senate.

Each week the council will answer a question on parenthood posed to them by readers or another member of council. This week, the Moms Council addresses legislation under consideration in the Ohio Senate that would make it illegal to smoke in a car with a child younger than 6 years old inside. Susan Jerome: That's a tough one. I understand the logic behind the legislation but how far is too far for the government to dictate our lives? That is my concern. If we allow the government to start controlling our personal choices then what will they consider their responsibility next? Although I understand the dangers of second-hand smoke, I'm inclined to say keep the government out of this one.

Do You Agree? Cuyahoga County OKs Domestic Partner Benefits For Gay Couples

Take our poll and tell us if you agree with the decision. And then explain your stance in the comments.

The children of gay couples who receive health insurance from Cuyahoga County will now get benefits that the children of straight, but unmarried, couples can't receive, according to the Plain Dealer. The Cuyahoga County Council, which voted 6-4 Tuesday on the measure, explained their decision to leave out the children of unmarried straight couples. The newspaper explains that: "The children of all county employees are covered, regardless of the employee's marital status. The difference in the new law is that the children of the partners of gay county employees are now covered. The children of unmarried partners of heterosexual county employees are not." From the Plain Dealer: The reason, council members said, is that heterosexual couples …
