Only the second pastor in parish history, served 23 years
The Rev. Sylvester W. Fridrich retired in 1996 after more than 23 years as pastor of St. Francis of Assisi Catholic Church in Gates Mills. Fridrich, who died Dec. 4, 2010, at age 84, at St. Mary of the Woods retirement community in Avon, was only the second pastor at St. Francis church since its founding in 1942. During his tenure, the congregation grew to 2,600 families. Women – from both religious orders and the laity – were added to the pastoral staff. Fridrich also served as dean of the Cuyahoga Suburban Southeast Deanery and as a member of the Diocesan Consultors Board while handling pastoral duties in Gates Mills. A founder of modern applied electromagnetics
Robert E. Collin, professor emeritus of electrical engineering and applied physics at Case Western Reserve University, contributed significantly to the development of microwave engineering with his scientific research. The Highland Heights resident, who died of complications from lung cancer Nov. 29, 2010, at age 82, received numerous honors for his research on antenna theory, microwave engineering and applied electromagnetic theory. He received the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers Schelkunoff Prize Paper Award in 1992, Electromagnetics Award in 1998 and Third Millennium Medal in 2000. The first of June Lund Shiplett's 15 historic romance novels, The Raging Winds of Heaven, was published in 1978, when the author was 48 years old. The Mayfield Heights native, who died Dec. 19 at age 80, produced 15 romance novels, many of which were part of her "Winds" series featuring a heroine from the Revolutionary War era. While her publishers were not keen on her veering away from the generally accepted formula for romance novels, her readers loved her for including heroines who were middle-aged, sometimes overweight and/or connected with northeast Ohio.
