Casey Spear, a 2010 Mayfield High School graduate, was named to the 2013 Allstate American Football Coaches Association Good Works Team, which honors student-athletes in the NCAA for their volunteer work. Spear is the kicker for Vanderbilt University.
"He's a great guy to be up for this award," Larry Leathers, Vanderbilt's assistant football director, said during the nomination phase. "He's also one of the best kickers in America."
Spear was one of a record 150 nominees for the team. He is one of two Ohio natives named to the team (also, Tusculum quarterback Bo Cordell from Cincinnati). Allstate and the AFCA have named a Good Works Team every year since 1992.
According to the AFCA, Spear:
- Spent spring break on mission trips in 2011, 2012 and 2013. He visited Mexico, Haiti and Peru to lead camps and work on the construction and maintenance of orphanages.
- Visited patients at Monroe Carell Jr. Children’s Hospital at Vanderbilt to raise their spirits.
- Mentored adults at Safe Harbor of Nashville through a recovery program that aims to keep adult men drug- and alcohol-free.
