Mayfield Baseball Team Beats Willoughby South

The team will face Mentor on Saturday for a shot at the Sweet 16

The playoff game between Mayfield and Willoughby South carried on about an hour longer than expected amid bizarrely cold, late May weather, but the Wildcats got the outcome they hoped for.

Mayfield beat South 4-1, making way for a matchup against Mentor at 11 a.m. Saturday morning at Euclid High School. The winner of Saturday's game becomes Euclid District champion and gets a trip to the Sweet 16 in Canton.

Controversial calls irked the crowd and the Euclid Fire Department responded to a portable bathroom that went up in flames in the far distance behind the diamond, but most people still wound up talking about junior sensation John Schreiber. He gave up his only run in the first inning, but none after that.
