Hawken Football Scrimmage Gets A Little Serious

Anderson takes a big hit but gets up to score during an exhibition game with Beachwood

Scrimmages are supposed to be light-hitting affairs without a real score being recorded and special-teams play kept at a minimum.

But you wouldn’t have known that from the way running back received a vicious helmet-to-helmet hit from Beachwood’s Nate Hamilton on Friday night.

Anderson had his bell rung, and the dazed and confused junior looked like he was chiming on the wrong hour for a while on the sidelines at Hawken’s Walton Stadium. But the team’s trainer and doctor cleared him to return in overtime.

The young man who had his helmet hidden from him on the sidelines scored the game-tying touchdown on two overtime runs to match an earlier Beachwood TD scamper. Then Ian Bell found senior Mark Murgiano in the corner of the end zone for the winning conversion. Murgiano had just stopped a late Bison drive with an interception.

If the season is anything like Friday, the Hawks won’t have the “boring” box checked on anybody’s fan appreciation survey.
