Part 3 Petitioning:

The first signatures were the easiest, the stop over at the friends we have made here in Highland Heights. The following group of signatures was also pretty easy, my boys have been on the Highland Heights Hurricanes since they could walk, and the Hurricanes parents are great. I recommend the Hurricanes to any family in the City.

Next up, it was door to door. I admit to being nervous, walking up to a new house to introduce myself, but I had few successes, where I actually talked to folks, told them what I wanted to do, listened to their ideas and opinions. I started to feel confident, that this is something I can do. Then I ran into a string of people hiding when I knocked, or worse, telling me to go away.

That was an important reminder that everyone is different, and using that knowledge will be an advantage when making decisions on Council. I will look at an issue from several viewpoints before making a decision.

My favorite part of the petition gathering was the education. Some residents were unclear on roles between Council At Large and the Ward Council positions. Some were unaware that this year was an election year for Council. One resident said he had never seen a Council representative in his 15 years in Highland Heights.

Maybe that is an idea, to invite the Council members to walk a different neighborhood each month, to talk and meet the residents they represent? What is your opinion?
