Third-graders Make Marilyn's Voice Heard

Mayfield Heights Wal-Mart and snowy weather set the stage.

You are never too young or too cold to help those in need. While many Hillcrest residents were fighting crowds, snow flurries and the traffic on Interstate 271, the third-grade students from Sunview Elementary school were busy at the . They were learning about economics, perseverance and helping others.

The economics lesson started earlier in the year when they borrowed capital to start their fund raising business. Manufacturing came next as they made scarves and dog/cat toys. The most difficult part might have been sales and marketing, but the students did well. They smiled and shivered as they told shoppers about their efforts to help abused and neglected dogs like Marilyn.

Marilyn, the inspiration for rescue group Marilyn's Voice, was de-barked, or had her vocal chordes cut in a puppy mill. Although she was rescued from the mill and eventually became a therapy dog, her life was cut short due to long term complications. Thanks to these  third graders and many others, her voice carries on.
