September is National Preparedness Month, and area safety forces will do its part next week to ensure the safety of Mayfield students.

Mayfield Middle School will host Public Safety Day from 8 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. on Sept. 12. According to the school district, 14 regional safety forces will set up stations on the campus, allowing students, grades 4 to 8, to rotate and get a sense of various elements of safety. Police, fire, SWAT and HAZMAT departments are among those who will set up stations. A Metro LifeFlight helicopter will also take off and land at the middle school.

"Our reason to do this is to teach kids not to be frightened of safety forces in the event of an emergency," Kevin Sur, a program officer with the Office of Emergency Management at Cuyahoga County Public Safety and Justice Services, said in a news release. "We want to teach children about the tools and resources that are in place to keep them safe."

Buses will transport elementary students to and from their schools. The middle school will provide a snack, but students are asked to bring a brown-bag lunch to have following Public Safety Day.

Parents with more questions should contact their school principal.
