Mayfield Students Become Hilltoppers for a Day

Middle school wears red and black in support of Chardon High.

students were no longer Wildcats on Friday – they were Hilltoppers in a show of support for Chardon High.

Principal Paul Destino said the shooting affected many people at the school, including himself. Chardon High Principal Andy Fetchik is a close friend and godfather of Destino's son.

"One of our staff member's nephew was shot. We have people who had a first cousin pass away. My son's godfather is the principal (Andy Fetchik). There's a big connection," Destino said.

He said Fetchik told him about the number of cars and photos that were being received and how they are helping the school district heal, so he asked students and staff to wear Chardon's colors – red and black – and pose for a photo to send to Fetchik.

"This morning it was like a sea of black and red," Destino said before more than 900 students filled into the gym for the photo.
