Mayfield Soccer Team in Regional Final on Saturday

Will face defending state champion St. Ignatius.

The boys soccer team reached its first regional final in 22 years by beating Aurora 3-2 on Tuesday. That earned the Wildcats (15-1-3) a showdown with defending state champion St. Ignatius (19-1) at 3 p.m. Saturday in Rocky River for a regional title.

The winner will advance to the state final four and a Nov. 8 state semifinal match at a site to be determined.

Seniors Joey Wise (two goals) and Nick Kane scored against Aurora. St. Ignatius advanced with a 1-0 win against Massillon Jackson, the team that knocked off Mayfield in a regional semifinal last year.

Mayfield, which has now won a district title four consecutive years, cleared a hurdle by reaching the regional final. Prior to last year's loss to Massillon Jackson, the Wildcats were defeated in the semifinals twice by St. Ignatius.

"It's a tremendous feat," coach Sean McNamara said about making the regional final. "We've been to the semifinals on five occasions and it's gone down to the odd call. It's been close every time."

The team posted its best record in 22 years and it as good as any in his tenure, McNamara said. However, they're up against a nationally ranked St. Ignatius squad.

"We're contenders until we beat them," he said.

Even though it'll be a challenge, Mayfield players were hoping St. Ignatius would also advance.

"Everyone feels excited to have another opportunity," McNamara said.

A tailgate party is planned before Saturday's game and a Spirit Bus will be sent from the school. Assistant coach Dave Rainier said the team was impressed and humbled by the 500 fans who traveled to Revere to see the game against Aurora.
