Mayfield Schools Remain Excellent with Distinction

State report cards to be released to public on Wednesday

The earned the top rating of "excellent with distinction" on the state report card for the third consecutive year.

The Ohio Department of Education will release report cards to the public on Wednesday, but school district officials were notified in advance.

"We're very pleased," Superintendent Philip Price said. "We won't know until the public release how everybody did across the board. Typically, about 8 percent make it to the level of excellent with distinction."

The district met adequate yearly progress benchmarks for the third year in a row and the district's performance index went up from 101.6 last year to 102.2. The performance index goes from zero to 120 and is a weighted average that includes all tested subjects and grades and untested students.

To be judged "excellent" a district has to meet at least 25 of the 26 indicators – Mayfield made all 26 – or have a performance index score of at least 100. "With distinction" is earned by showing above-expected growth for at least two consecutive years.

Price said Mayfield does not teach to the state report card tests.

"If you focus on the state curriculum and kids do the work, they're going to be prepared for the state assessment tests,"  he said.

Price said the community should be proud of the excellent with distinction status.

"That's the kind of thing that's really good. That's what the community wants to hear, that's what Realtors want to hear to help sell homes," he said.

All of the district's buildings were also rated excellent.
