Mayfield High Students Raise More Than $8,000 For Charity

Jump Rope for Heart helps American Heart Association

The "Save a Heart, Don't Break One" theme was printed on the back of T-shirts worn by the more than 700 Mayfield High School students who participated in the annual Jump Rope for Heart event on Monday.

The one-day fundraiser, coordinated by physical education teacher Tina Monastero, raised $8,379 for the American Heart Association. The eighth grade sponsors the event, but students from all grades participate.

The top fundraiser was 11th-grader Morgan Yokosuk, who raised $1,000.

"Her father died of heart disease two years ago at age 45, so this is a special cause for her," Monastero said.

To get out the message about the event, students wrote letters inviting people to join in jumping rope. This year, Cleveland Indians mascot Slider participated, as well as gold medal-winning softball player Crystl Bustos, who also took part last year.

"We also had someone write to Betty White. Of course, she didn't make it.  But her assistant sent a letter," Monastero said.

Professional volleyball player Misty May also declined, but responded with a letter and autograph.

Monastero said students get excited about the event, during which there may be as many as 200 students jumping rope at the same time.

"It's a great day for them," she said. "What I like best is that not only are they doing something to help their own health but they're helping others."
