Mayfield High Student Gets Perfect Score on ACT Test

Evan Kominsky gets a 36 on college entrance exam

Mayfield High School  junior Evan Kominsky achieved a perfect score of 36 on the ACT college entrance exam.

Nationally, about 1.6 million students take the test. Last year, there were 588 perfect scores.

Kominsky, who has a 4.7 grade point average, first took the ACT test in December and had an overall score of 33. The test covers English, mathematics, reading and science and is scored on a scale of 1-36.

"My parents suggested a try again for a higher score and see what I could get," he said. "Realistically, I thought maybe I could get a 33 or 34."

He didn't do any specific studying for the test, other than reviewing an official ACT packet handed out at school. He's hoping the result helps when it comes to applying for colleges. Schools he's considering include Ohio State University, Michigan and colleges in the Boston and Philadelphia areas.

"Hopefully, I'll be able to get into my choice of schools," Kominsky said.

In addition to excelling in academics, Kominsky runs the 1-mile event for the school track team and is a member of the cross country squad. He also participates in many volunteer activities with United Synagogue Youth.

His favorite subject is chemistry. "I'm a big fan of chemistry. I know a lot of people don't like it," he said.

Kominsky's not sure what his college major will be, but he wants to go to medical school after getting his undergraduate degree.

"I was considering some type of biological science or engineering," he said.

Kominsky said some friends have joked about the accomplishment, which he really didn't want to make a fuss about. However, the school's principal made sure everyone knew about the perfect score.

"Mr. (James) Loewer made an announcement to the whole school. It was a little embarrassing," he said.
