Mayfield High Makes Newsweek List of Top 500 Schools

School ranked 455th based on six criteria

made Newsweek's list of America's Best High Schools.

Mayfield was ranked 455th among the 500 best public high schools, based on criteria that included graduation rate (25 percent of score), college enrollment rate (25 percent) Advanced Placement tests taken per graduate (25 percent), average SAT/ACT scores (10 percent), average AP/International Baccalaureate/Advanced Certification of Education scores (10 percent) and AP courses offered (5 percent).

A panel of education experts developed the ranking formula. Mayfield has a 97 percent graduation rate, 90 percent of graduates immediately enroll in college, they take 1.0 AP test per graduate and the average SAT score was 1,629, which combined to give the school a Newsweek score of 0.146.

Mayfield High School Prinicipal Anthony Loewer said he wasn't surprised by the honor.

"We have hard‐working, interested, smart students at Mayfield who are taught by hard‐working, interested, smart teachers," Loewer said. "Our staff and administrators work together to focus on goals, like improving literacy across the curriculum. Of course I am happy about this honor, but I'm happiest for our students who are learning and who are prepared for life."

The top-rated school, the School of Science and Engineering in Dallas, had a score of 2.874. The top school in Ohio was Walnut Hills in Cincinnati, which ranked 43rd and had a score of 1.07.

Other Cleveland-area schools that made the list were Chagrin Falls at 92nd, Solon at 113th, Olmsted Falls at 363rd and Avon Lake at 418th. In order to be considered for the list, schools had to complete a survey requesting data. More than 1,100 schools were reviewed to come up with this year's top 500 list. Newsweek has been running a list of top high schools since 1998.
