Mayfield Girls 'On The Run'

Middle school girls talk about issues while training for a 5K.

Mayfield Middle School teachers and 12 girls in grades 6-8 voluntarily meet after school to focus on emotional, physical and developmental issues like conflict resolution, peer pressure, nutrition and healthy habits.

Since March, Mayfield Middle School Girls on the Run have been meeting twice a week to talk about tween issue and to train for the 5K run on May 19 at Lock 3 Park in downtown Akron.

Girls on the Run of Greater Summit  is a non-profit prevention program in Ohio for girls in the 3rd through 8th grade. Its mission is "to inspire girls to be joyful, healthy and confident using a fun, experience-based curriculum which creatively integrates running."

“Most of these girls have never participated in something like this. It really is an awesome experience for all of us,” said volunteer coach Traci Wright, who is a guidance counselor at the middle school. “This program teaches girls to be proud of who they are. It shows them how our emotional, physical and spiritual health is intertwined.

In addition to Traci Wright, other MMS teachers who are voluntarily coaching the MMS Girls on the Run are Kerry Rutigliano, Heather Vokic, Holly Thrasher.
