Hawken Joins Exclusive Global Online Academy

Hawken is the only school in Ohio to join the worldwide consortium of independent schools

Hawken now belongs to an exclusive group of schools across the globe whose students will engage in shared learning on the Web.

Hawken School recently announced its membership in the Global Online Academy, a 23-member consortium of independent schools who take full-credit, Web-based courses that include tests, conversations and collaborations with students in other states and countries.

“This will be a multi-year process, as we gain the information and ideas needed to utilize this partnership in a way that most enhances the Hawken tradition and learning experience,” D. Scott Looney, Head of School, said in a news release.

Hawken is the only Ohio school in the academy. Others schools are from places like China, Chicago, Atlanta, New Orleans, Indonesia, New York, Washington and more.

According to a Wall Street Journal report, each member school pays the alliance an annual $30,000 membership fee, and an additional $700 per student per course. The fees help compensate the teachers for the extra work of teaching a class online.
