Andrew Bieber will play in qualifying tournament Monday

sophomore Andrew Bieber's school year ended early, as he finished up Friday in order to head off to the Oakmont County Club in California for the U.S. Open Sectional Qualifying Tournament on Monday. Gilmour's school year ends on Tuesday.

On Monday, the 16-year-old Shaker Heights resident will be competing with 34 other amateurs and 58 professionals and an amateur awaiting reinstatement as they seek one of four qualifying spots for the 111th U.S. Open in Bethesda, MD, on June 16-19.

Bieber will be one of the youngest participants, along with fellow 16-year-old Beau Hossler Jr. of Santa Margarita High School. Also playing will be PGA Tour member Charlie Wi, which caught Bieber's attention.

"Charlie Wi is golfing in this," he said. "Charlie Wi, that's a big deal."

Bieber advanced to the sectional qualifier by shooting a 1-under par 70 at Beechmont County Club on May 10. Earlier this year, he helped lead Gilmour Academy to its fifth Division III boys golf state championship.
