Gilmour Academy Golfer Advances to U.S. Open Sectional

Will play June 6 in California for spot in tournament

Andrew Bieber of Gilmour Academy finished second in a qualifying tournament at Beechmont Country Club and was one of nine local players to earn a spot in sectional qualifiers for the U.S. Open.

Bieber, 16, shot a 1-under-par 70 in a field of 125 amateurs and professionals. He finished one shot behind Mackenzie Hughes, a junior at Kent State University who was the 2011 Mid-American Conference champion.

“I was consistent and had one bogey and two birdies, so it was a solid round,” the Shaker Heights resident said in a press release.  “It was a golf course where you just needed to hit a lot of fairways.  I hit 11-of-13 fairways and 15 greens.”

He is eligible to play in one of 13 sectional tournaments and plans to go to California on June 6 to compete for a spot in the U.S. Open.

The U.S. Open will be June 16-19 at Congressional Country Club in Bethesda, MD.
