Gilmour Academy Girls to Be College Athletes Next Fall

Three students sign letters of intent

Three Gilmour Academy seniors have signed letters of intent to play college athletics.

Melanie Trushel of Chardon will play basketball for NCAA Division II Lake Erie College, Camille Corbin of San Diego will play Division I hockey at Union College and Brittany Link of Hinckley will play volleyball at Division I Brown University.

Brian Horgan, Upper School director, noted that the three girls worked hard in the classroom and at athletics in order to earn scholarships.

"There really is no longer any offseason in athletics," he said Wednesday as the girls signed their letters of intent.

Trushel, a guard and wing, was captain of the varsity girls' basketball team, which was 61-13 and won sectional and district championships each year during the three years she played. Trushel plans to study communications and business and wants to become an event planner.

Corbin was captain of the girls' prep hockey team and its leading scorer with 53 goals and 54 assists. She helped lead Gilmour to the championship of the Phillips Exeter Tournament in January. She plans to major in biology and become a physical therapist.

Link was part of a volleyball team that finished second in the Division III state tournament, the third Final Four appearance for the Lancers in her four seasons on the team. The was named Volleyball Player of the Year by the News-Herald and was named to the Division III All-Ohio First Team. Last year, the setter/hitter had 317 kills, 72 blocks and 491 assists. She intends to study biology or premed.
