Video: Retiring Mayfield Heights Fire Chief Sent Home in Style

Takes traditional final ride in fire truck

Fire Chief Michael J. Forte retired Friday as the longest-serving full-time chief in the city's history. On his final day of 33 years of service, the city gave him a retirement sendoff that included a ride home in a fire truck.

"I don't know if you can ever prepare for this," an emotional Forte said as he gathered in the truck bays with firefighters one last time. "You have three years left, then two, then one, and all of a sudden it's here."

Forte started on Aug. 13, 1978, was promoted to lieutenant in 1983 and captain in 1985 before being named chief on May 3, 1987.

"The opportunity to become chief came up early in my career. I was fortunate. I worked for three tremendous mayors. I couldn't ask for better bosses," Forte said. "I know in other places there is a political element. That's never been a problem here."

Working in Mayfield Heights was also special for Forte because it's where he grew up.

"I was born and raised in this city. There's no place I'd rather spend my career," he said.

Forte said what he'll miss most is the camaraderie with his co-workers.

"You live with the guys. You eat with them. They sleep here," he said.

A number of firefighters showed up to watch Forte as he was driven home in departmental tradition on the vehicle of his choice. He went with a pumper truck with an aerial ladder.

A retirement party for Forte will take place on Thursday at the Pine Ridge Country Club.
