Senate Passes Grendell-Sponsored Resolution to Block Health Care Reform Law

Legislation paves way for constitutional amendment

Senate Joint Resolution 1, passed by the Ohio Senate today, provides general election voters in Ohio the chance to enact a constitutional amendment that would block provisions in "ObamaCare," said its sponsor, state Sen. Tim Grendell, R-18.

"Ohioans need to have the ability to decide what kind of care best fits their individual needs," Grendell said. "The federal health care bill is another example of the fed's overreaching its authority in spite of the sovereign powers guaranteed by the 10th Amendment. By passing SJR 1, the Ohio Senate gives its support to the effort to defeat the unconstitutional federal mandate. This is an important personal liberty issue."

Similar legislation has been approved by voters in Arizona, Missouri and Oklahoma.

In order for an amendment to appear on the November ballot, the resolution must pass the Ohio House with a three-fifths majority or 400,000 valid signatures must be gathered on petitions by August.
