Mayfield Village Concerned About State Control of Taxes
Resolution passes opposing any third party collection.
Finance Director Ron Wynne doesn't want to see the state collecting money on behalf of municipalities, an idea that was mentioned by Tax Commissioner Joe Testa.
"There's a real fear we're going to lose all the tools we have," Wynne told council at a recent caucus meeting.
The Regional Income Tax Agency collects taxes on behalf of the village, an arrangement Wynne said has been working. "Right now, we have instant access to information," he said.
His concerns include loss of local control, accuracy of information and timeliness of receipt of tax revenues.
Mayfield Village Council supported Wynne's opinion, passing a resolution Monday opposing state or any other third party control of tax collections. Councilman Joseph Saponaro noted that communities have an ally in Ohio Auditor Dave Yost.
"The auditor of the state of Ohio agreed that it should not go to a third party or the state," Saponaro said.
