Mayfield Schools Plan Parking Lot Near Well

Stonecreek area residents ask city to delay approval pending help with problems

City Council granted preliminary site approval for a planned parking lot expansion at the Mayfield City School District administrative offices, 1101 SOM Center Road.

However, area residents at Monday's council meeting had asked that problems with a gas well be worked out before granting approval to the lot. Residents in the Stonecreek area have complained about sights and sounds relating to a well operated by Seagull Development Corporation.

"Postpone until we see in writing a plan," said Nancy Broers of Cobblestone Drive. She said fencing around the gas well operation does not go down to the ground and that the loud, hissing noise produced is very irritating.

"The meters and gauges should never have been placed so close to our home," she said.

Several other residents also attended the meeting. Council President Michael Ballistrea told them that while the school district is taking ownership of land containing pressure reducers, the well head and tank battery are not part of the property.

"I don't feel personally that delaying it is going to be advantageous to the residents of the Stonecreek development," he said.

He said that police officers have been out to the area to take measurements and there is a possibility that the well is a noise nuisance.

Mayor Gregory Costabile said zoning of the school district land really has nothing to do with the concerns mentioned by residents and said the city will continue with ongoing discussions to find a way to help them.

Councilwoman Donna Finney said there needs to be a buffer to improve the appearance and reduce the noise.

"I feel bad for the residents there because they have this beautiful patio overlooking woods and there's a loud hissing noise," Finney said.

She suggested that the school district, while not owning the property, may be able to find a way to work with the landowner to put a buffer up.
