UPDATED 11:33 p.m.

Mayfield Village and Highland Heights have joined Mayfield Heights to move trick or treat hours to 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. Friday, according to the school district web site.

Hours were originally scheduled for Wednesday, but with severe weather moving into the area on Monday because of Hurricane Sandy concern over children's safety forced the rescheduling.

Gates Mills held its trick or treating this past weekend.

"We apologize for any inconvenience the change may cause residents. However, we must be mindful, as a community, as to what is truly in the best interests of our children and always take necessary steps to preserve their safety, health and welfare," Mayfield Heights city officials said on the city web site.

The new date will allow the children and their parents to enjoy Halloween festivities on a non-school night, city officials said.

As in previous years, Mayfield Heights safety forces will patrol that night, the city said.
