Mayfield Heights Seeking $2.45 Million in Federal Funds

Money would pay for police equipment, stormwater management

Mayfield Heights officials are seeking $2.45 million in federal funding for police equipment and stormwater management.

City Council authorized Mayor Gregory Costabile to hire LNE Group to advocate for the funds on the city's behalf. The deadline is March 6 to apply with Sen. Sherrod Brown for congressional directional spending for 2012.

LNE Group will be paid up to $25,000, depending on how much funding is received.

Costabile said $450,000 is being sought through a COPS program that provides funds for communications.

"Computers, things of that nature," Costabile said. "There also are a couple of scanners that police can use to scan license plates of cars in the area and receive detailed information. Obviously, these things can be costly."

Another $2 million is being applied for to pay for stormwater management and sewer-related issues. Costabile said the city received $500,000 in 2008 for sewer work on Mayfield Road.

"We have issues. Some of the sewer lines beneath our streets are going to be in need of significant repair," he said.

Costabile added that work might also help regarding rate increases from the Northeast Ohio Regional Sewer District.

"The increased rates may be limited somewhat if we are able to reduce some of the stormwater issues ourselves," he said.
