Mayfield Heights Residents Can Get Instant Notifications From City

Registration for Code Red available at website

Mayor Gregory Costabile urges residents and businesses to sign up for the city's Code Red notification system, also known as reverse 911.

At Monday's council meeting, the mayor said a recent test of the city's Code Red notification system had a 62 percent success rate, meaning that 38 percent of people called didn't answer or did not have voicemail or an answering machine to receive the message.

Costabile said he wanted to provide such as service when he first took office in 2006, but the $50,000 cost was prohibitive. Technology brought the cost down to $8,700 annually for Code Red, which is an Internet-based service.

There is a link with Code Red registration information on the home page of the city website.

Residents who do not have Internet access or someone who can register for them can call City Hall at 440-442-2626, ext. 407, and a city employee will enter their contact information.

In addition to notification about emergencies, the service can be used for information about road construction or conditions of baseball fields.

"It will be used for critical information, but it doesn't always have to be emergency related," Costabile said.

Costabile said that the city also plans to provide text messages and email notifications.
