Longtime Mayfield Heights Police Officer Retires

Alvin Schmitt was one of first K9 officers

Lt. Alvin Schmitt retired from the on Aug. 21.

He started on May 16, 1974 and served on the Suburban Police Anti-Crime Network SWAT team in the 1980s, Executive Lt. Steve Ondercin said.

Schmitt also served as one of the department's first K9 officers when that unit was formed in the 1980s. He was promoted to sergeant in 1989 and lieutenant in 1992.

He was a shift commander since 1992 and also served on the department's honor guard from 2000 to the present.

"On the day of his retirement, he marched downtown in the Peace Officers Memorial," Ondercin said.
