Gas Well Noise Bothering Mayfield Heights Neighborhood

Residents ask city officials for help

Residents of the Stonecreek area of say they were misled when they were told that a gas well would not have a big impact on the neighborhood.

Linda Bumbalo of Cobblestone Drive said Seagull Development Corporation installed huge tanks and the drilling operation makes constant noise.

"We were told that we would not know it was there," she said at Monday's City Council meeting, as residents sought city assistance in dealing with their complaints.

She said an additional fence is needed for privacy and 11 months of talks with Seagull have been unsuccessful.

Harvey Mitchell asked council to appoint a committee to investigate the matter.

"How does a gas well get drilled so close to Mayfield Middle School?" he said. "We have been treated with nothing but complete contempt by Seagull."

Council President Michael Ballistrea said there's not much the city can do if the drilling operation meets state requirements. However, he said the city will look into safety concerns and see if barriers can be added to ease concerns.

Mayor Gregory Costabile said Building Director Thomas Jamieson has been working to address residents' concerns and has been in contact with Seagull and Dominion, which has equipment at the site to register the flow of gas.

"Dominion has been receptive to help out," he said.

He said the city will work to get additional landscaping and a fence, but the noise issue is difficult to handle from a city perspective because the state is in charge of gas well permits.
