Costabile Impressed with Romney's Message of Optimism

Talk at Landerhaven focused on country's future.

Instead of bashing opponents along the Republic primary campaign trail, Mitt Romney took a patriotic approach to his speech at the Cuyahoga County Republican Party Lincoln Day Dinner.

The event, held at Executive Caterers at Landerhaven, was attended by 1,200 diners and another 100 standing-room only guests. Mayfield Heights Mayor Gregory Costabile said people were in a patriotic mood from the start, singing along with the National Anthem, and Romney kept that momentum going.

"I think it was the message that people wanted to hear," Costabile said. "Although the country is in need of some change, he retains optimism that it can be achieved."

Romney, former governor of Massachusetts, talked about his background in the business world and said more jobs can be had under his leadership. "He talked about having the experience and the know-how to take private sector initiatives that have been successful into the public sector," Costabile said.

What Romney didn't do was talk about Rick Santorum, Newt Gingrich or any of his opponents in seeking the Republican presidential nomination.

"He did not mention any of his Republican opponents in any of his remarks," Costabile said, adding that the annual Lincoln Day event is about bringing Republicans together. "The idea is to come in with a feeling of pride and to leave with one. I really think his remarks focused on excitement of what the future has to hold."

Costabile remains undecided as to his vote in the March 6 primary, but said Romney likely picked up some votes among those in attendance.

"I would think he definitely didn't hurt himself. I'd be shocked if anyone came in not sure and left saying, 'He's not my guy,'" Costabile said.

Costabile was proud that the event was in Mayfield Heights and drew people from all over Ohio.

"It was a great event," he said. "They run a first-class operation at Executive Caterers. I did not hear one complaint."
