5 Things You Need to Know This Week

Holiday parade, musical program and more

1. Musical Soundscapes: Touring the World Through Sampling, for ages 11-18, will be offered at 6:30 p.m. Tuesday at the Cuyahoga County Library Mayfield Branch, 6080 Wilson Mills Road. Professional audio engineers from Progressive Arts Alliance will work with students to create their own recordings of audio samples taken from musical styles around the world. 2. The Fourth of July Parade will line up at Gates Mills Elementary School at 10 a.m. and start at 11 a.m. toward the village center. A refreshment stand will be open from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. at Epping Road and Main Street.

3. With Mayfield Village having its fireworks over the weekend, there are no fireworks shows in Hillcrest Patch tonight. However, you could catch displays at dusk at Coulby Park in Wickliffe and Willoughby South High School in Willoughy, at 9:50 p.m. at Civic Center Park in Mentor or at 10 p.m. at Shaker Middle School in Shaker Heights.

4. Because of the holiday, Council has switched its caucus meeting this week to 8:30 p.m. Tuesday at the Civic Center, 6622 Wilson Mills Road. The meeting will be preceded by an 8 p.m. public hearing on the 2012 tax budget.

5. City Council Committee of the Whole will meet at 8 p.m. Tuesday at city hall, 5827 Highland Road. Agenda items include an economic self-assessment study, renovations of bathrooms at the old poolhouse in the city park and a safety update from Police Chief James Cook.
