Wanted Man's Courtesy Ride Request From Pepper Pike Police Leads to Arrest in Mayfield Heights

Norman Lee Perkins Jr. was wanted in Mayfield Heights for receiving stolen property in April.

A police chief isn't the first person you'd expect a wanted man to ask for a courtesy ride, but it happened last week and led to an arrest.

According to Mayfield Heights Police records, 50-year-old Norman Lee Perkins Jr. requested a courtesy ride from a Pepper Pike Police unit that happened by driven by the chief around 8:30 a.m. on July 5. Perkins wanted to go to Walmart in Mayfield Heights, and Pepper Pike's chief, Michael Cannon, agreed.

According to Lyndhurst Municipal Court records, Perkins was wanted in Mayfield Heights on a felony warrant for receiving stolen property in April, so it's unclear why he would ask police for a ride.

At some point, Cannon became suspicious and discovered that Perkins was wanted. His department contacted Mayfield Heights, which reported to the store and arrested Perkins.

The preliminary hearing for Perkins' felony case is scheduled for 9 a.m. on July 15. Judge Mary Kaye Bozza will preside over the case.
