Buckle Up for a Free Sonic Burger

For the second year, those who buckle up can be rewarded with a free burger for their safe behavior. 

The Cuyahoga County kickoff of the national seat belt enforcement mobilization known as “Click It Or Ticket” takes place on Thursday, May 16 with a Buckle Up For Burgers event at area Sonic restaurants. 

Between 11:00 a.m. and 1:00 p.m., law enforcement officers will be on hand to pass out vouchers for free burgers to all vehicle occupants spotted wearing seat belts when entering the parking lots of Sonic’s Mayfield or Parma locations. 

The “Click It Or Ticket” campaign is aimed at increasing seat belt usage numbers in Cuyahoga County, which lag far behind the national average.

Locally, the campaign will put extra emphasis on getting men to buckle up, since they are much less likely to take this life-saving precaution than women.

In 2012, 69% of fatal crash victims in Ohio were male.  Men are more likely to be killed in motor vehicle crashes in part because they are less likely than women to buckle up: in a 2012 observational survey, only 72% of male drivers buckled up, compared to 83% of female drivers. 

“If every woman could get one unbuckled male in her life to change his behavior,” Sergeant Ken Gillissie, Parma Police Department, said in a media release. “Cuyahoga County could see a significant increase in seat belt use and a major decrease in automobile injuries and fatalities.”

This year, in conjunction with the national “Click It Or Ticket” enforcement campaign, the Cuyahoga County Safe Communities Coalition will be running a campaign that encourages women to use their powers of persuasion, influence and even nagging to get men buckled up. 

The promotion, called “It’s OK 2 Nag…..About Seat Belts,”  gives women a chance to win an iPad mini, $500 shopping spree and even a one-of-a-kind baseball experience for him.
